SOD POODLES BLANK CARDINALS 1-0, EARN FIRST SHUTOUT IN FRANCHISE HISTORY
AMARILLO, Texas -  The Sod Poodles earned their first shutout as a franchise with a 1-0 victory over the Springfield Cardinals Thursday night in front of 5,283 fans at HODGETOWN. Amarillo righty starter Reggie Lawson and number-29 Padres prospect was brilliant against the Cardinals as he tossed six and one-third innings of one-hit, shutout baseball. Amarillo's lone run came in the first inning when Owen Miller advanced home via a fielding error.

The Sod Poodles struck early in game two with what would be the only run of the contest in the top of the first inning.
In the first, following a strikeout to leadoff batter Rodrigo Orozco, Edward Olivares struck a single which ricocheted off of Cardinals starting pitcher Evan Kruczynski. After a stolen base by Olivares, his fifth of 2019, he would come in to score after a throwing error on Luis Torrens' groundball.
In the second inning, Cardinals Chris Chinea struck a one-out double marking the first hit for Springfield. The hit would serve as the only allowed by Lawson as the Sod Poodles starter retired the next 14 of 16 batters, surrendering two walks within the span. Lefty reliever Kyle McGrath closed the inning unscathed to complete his work.
The Sod Poodles, who collected just three hits on the night, missed a big scoring opportunity in the bottom of the sixth after two consecutive walks were surrendered by Cardinals pitching and a two-out error extended the inning to load the bases, but a groundout would end the inning.
The Cardinals threatened in the eighth inning when a wild pitch on a swinging third strike allowed Conner Capel on base and another wild pitch would send him in scoring position with one out. However, two line-outs would end the half.
With three outs to go in the ninth, Soddies reliever David Bednar surrendered a leadoff walk to Kramer Robertson before giving up a broken-bat single to Dylan Carlson. After a strikeout swinging by Johan Mieses for the first out, Evan Mendoza hit a short infield single to load the bases, bringing the tying run 90 feet away. But two big swinging strikeouts delivered by Bednar would end the contest.

The Sod Poodles and Cardinals will play their final game of three-game series Friday night at HODGETOWN. Sod Poodles right-hander T.J. Weir will face off against Springfield southpaw Austin Warner. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

NOTES
All Zeroes: The Sod Poodles earned their first shutout as a franchise Thursday night at HODGETOWN with a 1-0 victory over the Springfield Cardinals. Oppositely, Amarillo has been shut out a total of three times during the 2019 season.
Don't Mess With The LAWson: In his fifth start, righty Reggie Lawson tossed a gem - six and one-third innings of one-hit ball against Springfield. It marked his longest start of 2019, first quality start of the season, and his second start (min. 5.0 IP) allowing one earned run.

Swipin': Edward Olivares swiped his fifth stolen base of the 2019 season, leading all Sod Poodles in the category. In the Texas League, he is tied for 11th.
Streak Over: Amarillo snapped their franchise high four-game losing streak Thursday night with a 1-0 victory over the Springfield Cardinals.
Three or Fewer: Thursday night marked the second time this season where each team totaled three hits. On April 7 in Corpus Christi, both the Sod Poodles and Hooks had three hits apiece; Amarillo lost 4-5 in the contest.
Rare Occurrence: Thursday night's victory marked the first time the Sod Poodles were victorious in a one-run margin game.
Different Pace: In game two, a less "flighty" night was on hand for both teams at HODGETOWN as it was just six-hit affair compared to Wednesday night's 17-hit, six-homer contest.
Snapped: Owen Miller's eight-game hit streak came to an end Wednesday night against the Springfield Cardinals. During his hit streak, Miller went 12-for-32 (.375) with a double, four runs, five RBI, and a home run. Miller's eight-game hit streak tied a franchise record with Luis Torrens who had eight hits between April 15 and April 26.

Torrens On A Tear: In Luis Torrens' last ten games before Thursday night, he batted .421 (16-for-38) with three home runs, seven RBI, and five runs. Against Springfield, this season Torrens is 9-for-19 (.473) with three home runs, four RBI, and five runs.

Pitchers Who Rake: Wednesday night's starter Emmanuel Ramirez helped himself out in the bottom of the fourth inning when he hit a two-RBI single to center field. Ramirez is the first pitcher ever to record a hit at HODGETOWN.
A Year For Yates: Padres reliever Kirby Yates recorded his 14th save on Tuesday night against the Atlanta Braves. Yates's fourteen saves are the most of any pitcher in Major League history before May 1. On May 2, Yates was announced as National League Reliever of the Month, a career first, and became the fourth different pitcher in Padres history to reach the feat.

Welcome to The Show: The San Diego Padres 12th ranked prospect Cal Quantrill made his Major League debut Wednesday night in Atlanta. The right-hander tossed 5.2 innings, allowed six hits, two earned runs, and struck out three Braves batters, but he earned the no-decision as the Padres fell to the Braves by a final score of 5-1. Quantrill appeared in 22 games with Double-A San Antonio last season.
