Saturday, March 8:
The Athletics defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks, 4-2, in game one of the Big League Weekend Spring Training two-game series before a sellout crowd of 8,708 at Las Vegas Ballpark.
Athletics left-hander JP Sears recorded the victory. He pitched 3.0 innings and allowed 3 hits, 1 run, walked 2 and struck out 4 on 60 pitches (35 strikes).
The Athletics scored two runs in the second inning and solo runs in the sixth and seventh. First baseman Nick Kurtz (1-for-2, walk) hit a solo home run in the second inning and shortstop Jacob Wilson (1-for-3) added a solo home run in the sixth inning.
Second baseman Zack Gelof was 1-for-2, walk, RBI.
Arizona scored its lone run in the eighth inning on an RBI single by shortstop Geraldo Perdomo.
D-backs left-hander Tommy Henry suffered the loss. He pitched 3.0 innings and allowed 3 hits, 2 runs, issued no walks and struck out 1 on 41 pitches (27 strikes).
Sunday, March 9:
The Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Athletics, 7-5, in the finale of the Big League Weekend Spring Training two-game series before a crowd of 8,130 at Las Vegas Ballpark.
The Big League Weekend two-day attendance total at Las Vegas Ballpark was 16,838.
The Athletics and D-backs split the two games series (A’s defeated the D-backs, 4-2, on Saturday).
The Athletics built a 4-0 lead after three innings. Catcher Jhonny Pereda (2-for-2, walk, two runs scored) hit a two-run home run in the third inning. Second baseman Zack Gelof was 2-for-3, RBI, run scored.
Athletics right-hander Mitch Spence pitched 3.1 innings in the no decision. He allowed 4 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), walked 2 and struck out 3 on 58 pitches (38 strikes).
The D-backs rallied for five runs in the middle three innings to take a 5-4 lead after 5 ½ innings. Arizona then added two runs in the seventh.
Arizona left-hander Blake Walston pitched 2.1 innings in the no decision. He allowed 3 hits, 3 runs, walked 2 and struck out 2 on 52 pitches (33 strikes).
D-Backs second baseman Tim Tawa was 1-for-2, 2 RBI. Shortstop Geraldo Perdomo was 1-for-1, two walks, two stolen bases, run scored.
The Aviators, under manager Fran Riordan, will open their 42nd season (1983-2024) in the Silver State against intrastate rival, the Reno Aces, Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, on Friday, March 28 at Las Vegas Ballpark.
