RENO, Nev. – After a successful first homestand against the Tacoma Rainiers, the Reno Aces (5-4) are now on their way to Salt Lake, where they will take on the Bees (4-5), the Triple-A Affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels. The six-game series will kick off on Tuesday, April 8, with the first pitch set for 5:35 P.M. PDT at The Ballpark at America First Square.
Salt Lake is coming off a split series against the Albuquerque Isotopes. The upcoming series will be the first of two six-game sets the Bees will host against the Aces this season. Reno is scheduled to host Salt Lake just once this season at the end of June.
Notable players on Salt Lake’s roster include OF Gustavo Campero and RHP Caden Dana.
Campero, a 27-year-old from Lorica, Colombia, is off to a blazing start in the 2025 campaign, going 15-for-39 (.385) with five doubles, two triples, four RBIs, and four walks over nine games. In the recent series against Albuquerque, the switch-hitter was a hitting machine, recording four multi-hit games— each featuring at least one extra-base hit. He performed well in 2024, slashing .279/.392/.472 with 38 extra-base hits, 50 RBIs, and 44 walks in 362 at-bats between Double-A Rocket City and Triple-A Salt Lake. Look for Campero to be a major contributor for the Bees this week.
Dana, the Angels’ No. 2 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline, was solid in his first start of the year, limiting the Isotopes to just one run over four innings, striking out four and walking three. Last season, the 21-year-old dominated at Rocket City, leading all of Double-A in ERA (2.52) and WHIP (0.94), while racking up 147 strikeouts over 135 1/3 innings across 23 starts. His performance earned him a September call-up, where he went 1-2 with a 9.58 ERA, eight strikeouts, and seven walks over three starts. His best outing with the Angels came in his MLB debut on September 1, 2024, when he held the Seattle Mariners to two runs on two hits and four walks, striking out four over six innings to earn the first win of his big-league career. Dana will be a threat on the mound as the Aces get their first look at the young prospect.
Jorge Barrosa put together a solid series this past week against the Rainiers, going 7-for-26 with five doubles, two RBIs, and two walks. The exciting outfielder saw limited action against the Bees last season but made the most of it, going 3-for-7 (.429) with two doubles and three RBIs in just two games. He’ll look to stay hot heading into this week’s matchup.
Yilber Diaz has been effective to start the season, posting a 2.89 ERA with 11 strikeouts and four walks over 9 1/3 innings across two starts. The promising flamethrower faced Salt Lake just once in 2024 and impressed, allowing three unearned runs while striking out six and walking two over 5 2/3 innings. Diaz has looked sharp early on, but his best is likely still to come. The upcoming series against the Bees could be the stage for his breakout performance.
The Aces return to Greater Nevada Field on April 15 to host the Round Rock Express, the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05 P.M. PDT.
