Royals first-round pick Bobby Witt Jr. officially put pen to paper yesterday and joined the Kansas City organization. With Witt Jr. now officially a pro, it begs the question: where will he go to start his career?
Witt Jr., who turns 19 tomorrow, just graduated from Colleyville Heritage High School (Texas) a couple of weeks ago. When most high school prospects sign, their first stop is usually at rookie-level ball in either Arizona League or Gulf Coast League, the lowest rungs on the minor league baseball ladder. For Witt Jr., that would mean joining the AZL Royals in Surprise, Arizona.
However, he is very advanced for a high school prospect, so much so that MLB.com's Jim Callis called him the second-best high school shortstop prospect of the last 30 years, ranking only behind 14-time All-Star Alex Rodriguez.
This leads some to believe the Royals might start Witt Jr. one level up in a rookie-advanced league, which could have him starting his professional journey with the B-Royals. Unlike most teams, though, Kansas City has two rookie-advanced affiliates. Witt Jr. could be with Burlington in the Appalachian League if he starts at the rookie-advanced level, but he could also head to the Northwest to play for the Idaho Falls Chukars in the Pioneer League.
The Burlington Royals are the Appalachian League affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. The Royals season starts on the road against the Bristol Pirates on Tuesday, June 18th. The home opener at Burlington Athletic Stadium is on Monday, June 24th against the Kingsport Mets. Single game tickets are on sale now!
