Carolina Pitchers Walk 14 in 17-8 Loss

ZEBULON – Jesus Chirinos and Jadher Areinamo both drove in two runs in the third, Hedbert Perez went 2-for-5 with two RBI, but Carolina Mudcats relievers Yujanyer Herrera, Arielbi Gonzalez and Yerlin Rodriguez lost a four run lead in the fifth while combining to allow 16 runs, 11 hits and 14 walks in Friday’s lopsided 17-8 loss to the visiting Columbia Fireflies at Five County Stadium.

Herrera was the first Carolina (31-27, 65-59) reliever to appear as he took over for starter Max Lazar in the third. Herrera walked seven, gave up six runs (five earned) with three in the fourth and three in the sixth. He also allowed five hits and struck out three over four innings. Gonzalez (0-1) worked just the one inning, but lost a 7-6 Carolina lead after giving up three runs, allowing three hits and walking three in the seventh. Rodriguez came out for the eighth and allowed seven runs on four walks and three hits. Rodriguez did not record an out in his appearance and left with two men on base while reaching 32 pitches (13 strikes).

Catcher Jesus Garcia took over as a pitcher in the eighth in place of Rodriguez and went on to finish both the eighth and ninth with only one run allowed on four hits. Garcia saw two inherited runners score, but overall faced just 11 batters while recording the final six outs of the game.

The Mudcats originally led 1-0 in the first when Eric Brown Jr. singled, moved to second on a force and stole third before scoring on a throwing error. The Carolina third then saw four more runs with Chirinos driving in two with his double and Areinamo bringing in two more with a two-out single.

The four run third had the Mudcats up 5-0, but the Fireflies (33-24, 51-72) came back with three in the fourth to cut the lead to 5-3. Herrera allowed all three runs in the fourth, but was given a 7-3 lead two work with as Carolina answered with two more runs in the fifth. Jace Avina tripled and scored on a double from Perez, and Alex Hall had a two-out RBI single in the fifth. Perez also had a RBI single in the ninth for the Mudcats.

Carolina’s elimination number fell to four with only eight games remaining this season.

Carolina’s 14 walks were a new season high and the most by Mudcats pitchers since the 2013 season (13 walks on 5/5/13).
