Carolina Wastes Early Lead in Series Splitting Loss

SALISBURY – Jadher Areinamo went 2-for-4 with a run in the second while helping the Carolina Mudcats build an early 2-0 lead, but the Delmarva Shorebirds rallied for three runs over the final three innings while earning a series tying 3-2 victory on Sunday evening at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, MD.

The Mudcats (21-21, 55-53) originally led 2-0 through the fifth before seeing the Shorebirds (16-26, 37-30) score three unanswered runs with two in the sixth and one in the seventh. Jadher Areinamo scored Carolina’s first run in the second after reaching on a force and eventually scoring on a throwing while stealing third. Hendry Mendez scored the second after walking to start the fifth and scoring later in the frame on a force out.

Down 2-0 after five, Delmarva then answered back when Elio Prado and Stiven Acevedo had consecutive run-scoring hits in the sixth. Frederick Bencosme scored on Prado’s triple in the fifth and later brought in the go-ahead run in the seventh with a single to right. Bencosme went 4-for-4 with a run and a RBI in the game for Delmarva.

Starter Fernando Olguin worked through five scoreless innings before giving up two runs and three hits in the sixth. Olguin faced three batters in the sixth before leaving the game with two runs allowed on 10 hits. He also walked one and struck out five. Reliever Miguel Guerrero ended up with the loss as he allowed Bencosme’s go-ahead single in the seventh. Guerrero (1-1) pitched the sixth and seventh and allowed a run on three hits over two innings. Jeison Pena later pitched a scoreless eighth with a walk and a strikeout.

Reliever Ryan Long earned the win for the Shorebirds after working the final three innings with seven strikeouts and one hit allowed. Long (5-4) was one of three Delmarva pitchers, including starter Deivy Cruz and reliever Edgar Portes, to work three innings in Sunday’s series finale. Cruz worked around four walks and struck out three while allowing one run in the second. Portes pitched the middle three where he allowed a run on three hits. He also walked two and struck out four.
