KANNAPOLIS – Jackson Chourio went 2-for-4 with his tenth home run of the season, but his two hits and his solo homer accounted for nearly all of Carolina’s offensive production in a 6-1 loss to the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers on Wednesday night at Atrium Health Ballpark. The Mudcats were held to just three hits in the loss and saw their season-high win streak come to an end at five straight.

The Cannon Ballers (7-4, 33-44) broke what was a scoreless tie in the fourth with a three run and three hit third against Carolina (6-5, 40-37) starter Jeferson Figueroa. DJ Gladney and Samil Polanco had back-to-back RBI doubles in the third, with Gladney’s driving in one run and Polanco’s bringing across two.

Figueroa (0-5) had managed to record two outs in the fourth before giving up the three Kannapolis runs. He then gave up back-to-back home runs to Logan Glass and Caberea Weaver in the fifth while seeing the Cannon Ballers take a 5-0 lead midway through. In all, Figueroa allowed five runs on six hits, including two home runs, over five innings pitched. He also walked one and struck out five while taking the loss.

Reliever Miguel Segura took over for Figueroa in the sixth and would go on to finish the game while working the final three innings with one run allowed on two hits. That lone run scored in the eighth on a home run by Wilfred Veras.

Tommy Sommer started for Kannapolis and allowed just one hit over six scoreless innings. Sommer (4-5) gave up a second inning single to Hedbert Perez and faced just one over the minimum over his six, near-perfect, innings. Reliever Bowen Plagge (S, 2) finished the game and allowed two hits to Chourio, including the ninth inning home run, but closed it out with five strikeouts while earning the save.

The loss snapped Carolina’s season-high five-game winning streak. It also evened their six-game series at 1-1 in Kannapolis with the Cannon Ballers. The series will continue with game three on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. in Kannapolis.
