ZEBULON – Jeferson Quero went 2-for-3 with three RBI, Eduardo Garcia hit a two-run home run in the eighth, Jheremy Vargas scored three runs and Alexander Cornielle pitched through his second straight quality start as the Carolina Mudcats, playing as los Pescados de Carolina, defeated the Delmarva Shorebirds 10-2 on Saturday evening at Five County Stadium.

The Mudcats (9-11, 43-43) struck first with two unearned runs in the first, with the second of which scoring on a RBI single from Hedbert Perez. Delmarva (7-13, 28-57) would answer right back with two runs in the second to tie it, but Quero broke the newly tied game with a RBI single in the last of the second as Carolina went up 3-2. The lead grew to 4-2 in the fourth when Vargas scored his second of three runs in the game and Carolina would later break it open with help of Quero’s two-run double and Garcia’s two-run home run in the eighth.

Cornielle (5-7) earned the win while pitching through his second straight quality start while going through the sixth and two runs allowed on six hits. His two run and three hit second started with a clean leadoff single from Isaac De Leon, but then continued with a Trendon Craig double that was dropped in right-center on a collision between Perez and Hendry Mendez. Cornielle then balked in a run and gave up a RBI double to Roberto Martinez immediately after the misplay. He eventually escaped the second with three straight outs and went on to hold the Shorebirds to just two other hits the rest of the way.

Relievers Jeison Pena and Fernando Olguin finished the game for the Mudcats with Pena working through two scoreless over the seventh and eighth and Olguin pitching a scoreless ninth.

Carolina’s first three runs were all scored against starter Juan De Los Santos, but only Quero’s RBI single in the second was earned to the Delmarva starter. Alejandro Mendez followed in relief and gave up one run while matching De Los Santos (2-8) with three innings pitched. His lone came in the fourth when Vargas scored on a bases loaded double play hit into by Oswal Leones. Angel Batista was brought in for the seventh and would work a scoreless frame before giving up all six Carolina runs in the eighth.

Mendez started the six-run Carolina eighth with a run-scoring ground rule double to left. Quero then followed with a two-run double off the left-centerfield wall and Leones followed with a RBI single to center. Garcia then capped the rally with a mammoth two-run home run to left-center.

The victory lifted the Mudcats into a 3-2 series lead with the visiting Shorebirds. The six-game series will conclude on Sunday with the sixth and final game of the series beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Five County Stadium.
