The Indianapolis Indians and Miami Nation of Indians of Indiana forged a partnership prior to the 2023 season. In addition to a land acknowledgment read before every Indians home game, the team hosted a Native American Heritage Night that included recognition of Miami veterans, a plaque dedication, smudge and drum ceremonies, educational opportunities for fans in attendance and more. The team’s name, which has been the Indianapolis Indians since 1902, will remain the same through the 2024 season as the organization continues to build upon its partnership with the Miami.
According to the Miami Nation of Indians of Indiana, one of the 100 largest tribes in the United States, it is the only continuously functioning, treaty-recognized tribe in the country that is not considered a tribe by the federal government. Federal recognition efforts continue today as tribal officials work on state and national levels to regain the respect and status the Miami of Indiana deserves.
