Cardinals Bats Tamed in Opener at Greeneville

GREENEVILLE, TN - The Johnson City Cardinals were defeated by the Greeneville Reds 9-5 on Sunday night. With this loss, the Cardinals have now lost 4/5 series openers and fall to 5-6 on the season. 
Greeneville got the scoring started in the bottom of the first against Oneiver Diaz, who was making his third start of the season. After a four-run first inning, the Cardinals got one back in the top of the second to make it 4-1 on a Dariel Gomez solo homerun (3) to straight away center field.
The Cardinals added one in the fifth after the Reds added one in the fourth. Michael Perri led off the inning with a double and Luis Flores followed up with a double of his own. After Brandon Riley walked, with one out, Carlos Soto hit a sac fly to score Michael Perri from third. At the end of five innings, the Reds led the Cardinals 5-2. 
Oneiver Diaz started the game for the Cardinals, in two previous starts this season, Diaz didn't make it past the fifth inning. Today, he was able to pitch six innings, while surrendering six hits, five runs (four earned runs), and seven strikeouts. Michael Brettell made his first appearance of the season and pitched one inning, surrendering three hits and three earned runs. Junior Gonzalez closed out the game and threw one inning, surrendering one hit, one earned run, and two walks.
After the Cardinals cut the lead to 5-3 in the seventh after Luis Flores hit a solo homerun to left field. The Reds responded with three in the bottom of the seventh to make it 8-3. In the top of the eighth, Kevin Woodall reached on an error and Dariel Gomez singled. With one out, and runners on first and second, Michael Perri reached on a throwing error by the Reds first baseman and that allowed Woodall to score from second to make the score 8-4. After Luis Flores walked to load the bases, Brandon Riley hit a sac fly to score Gomez from third and the score was 8-5. The Reds then answered with one in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 9-5.
The final line for the Cardinals was five runs on 10 hits with an error. The Cardinals fall to 5-6 on the season, but are still only two games behind first place Kingsport since they lost as well. 
The Cardinals come home to finish out the three game series against Greeneville, Dollar Monday on July 2nd and then a fireworks extravaganza on July 3rd.
