The Lynchburg Hillcats are a Minor League Baseball team in Lynchburg, Virginia. Under the ownership of Elmore Sports Group, the Hillcats play in the A Carolina League and are affiliated with the Cleveland Guardians. They had been a farm team of the Atlanta Braves from 2011 to 2014, the Cincinnati Reds in 2010, and the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1995 to 2009. The Hillcats play home games at Bank of the James Stadium.
While professional baseball in Lynchburg dates back to the late 1800s, Bank of the James Stadium was constructed in 1939 to be used as a complex for professional baseball teams and is currently the 5th oldest Minor League ballpark still in use. The baseball stadium was built in conjunction with an adjacent 6,000-person football stadium. The New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers played in the inaugural game at City Stadium on April 11, 1940 in front of an estimated crowd of 7,000. The ballpark would later be used as a spring training facility for many teams throughout the '40s and '50s and played host to many baseball greats such as Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Duke Snider, Jackie Robinson, Warren Spahn, Pee Wee Reese, Roy Campanella, and more!
