Barons' Cummings pitches no-hitter

Jeremy Cummings tossed the first nine-inning no-hitter in the 18-year history of the Scranton Wilkes-Barre Red Barons on Sunday, blanking the Rochester Red Wings, 5-0, at Frontier Field.

Cummings (8-6) walked four and hit a batter en route to his second career Minor League shutout. He matched a season high with nine strikeouts, punctuating the effort by fanning Gil Velazquez to end the game on his 137th pitch.

The 29-year-old right-hander encountered trouble only in the fifth, when Terry Tiffee and Kevin West drew one-out walks. But Cummings got Alex Romero to bounce into an inning-ending double play.

Cummings walked Andres Torres in the sixth and ninth and hit Kevin West in the eighth but stranded all three runners at first. Battery mate Jason Jaramillo was making his Triple-A debut.

It was the International League's first no-hitter since Durham's Jason Hammel and Juan Salas combined on a 4-0 blanking of Columbus on July 16. Ian Snell was the last individual pitcher to accomplish the feat for Indianapolis on May 15, 2005.

Scranton Wilkes-Barre's last no-hitter was a seven-inning effort by Robert Ellis on June 6, 2004.

Jim Rushford went 3-for-5 and got the Red Barons (83-58) on the board with an RBI single in the fifth. Gary Burnham went 4-for-5 with three runs scored, boosting his batting average to .341. Carlos Leon also collected four hits.

Starter Glen Perkins (0-1) allowed a run on six hits and five walks while fanning three in 4 1/3 innings for the Red Wings (79-63).
