Martin, Baldwin lead Wings to win
Dustin Martin fell a double short of hitting for the cycle, but powered Andy Baldwin and the Red Wings to a 4-2 win over the Buffalo Bisons Saturday night at Frontier Field. The teams meet again in a 6:05 p.m. game Sunday.
Rochester righty Baldwin turned in a 1-2-3 first inning, then saw his teammates stake him to an early lead. Bisons starter Chris Schwinden had allowed just one earned run in 10 2/3 innings against the Wings this season, but yielded two first inning runs Saturday - when Martin jerked a 1-2 pitch over the right field wall. Martin's ninth homer of the year also brought in Brandon Roberts for a 2-0 Rochester lead.
Schwinden allowed two more hits in the second, but stranded the Rochester runners and racked up his third and fourth strikeouts of the game. But the Wings didn't strand either of their two base runners in the bottom of the third. Martin got his second hit of the night, a line drive single to center, then Rene Tosoni followed with a single of his own, which put Martin on third while Tosoni advanced to second on the throw. Aaron Bates then hit a ground ball RBI to third which scored Martin and moved Tosoni to third. While Brian Dinkelman was batting, Schwinden threw a wild pitch which rolled all the way to the back stop and allowed Tosoni to score as well, giving the Wings a 4-0 lead.
The Herd got a run on the board in the top of the fifth when Raul Chavez hit a solo home run to left field. It was the league leading 21st home run Baldwin has allowed on the season.
The Wings knocked Schwinden out of the game in the bottom of the fifth, after getting Jeff Bailey to pop out. Schwinden pitched just four and a third innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits, seven strikeouts, and a wild pitch. He earned his first loss in his last five outings, and his first against the Wings in three starts this season. Martin hit a stand-up triple off reliever Taylor Tankersley with one out, but was unable to score. Martin finished the night 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI.
The Wings had another opportunity in the bottom of the sixth when Chase Lambin led the inning off with a triple, but he was stranded there on two ground outs and a pop up.
Baldwin (5-7) pitched brilliantly with the solo shot as the only blip. He allowed just one run on five hits, with no walks and one strikeout. Dusty Hughes relieved him in the top of the sixth and immediately found himself in trouble before he was able to work out of it. After a quick first out, an error by second baseman Dinkelman and a walk put runners on first and second. Martin made a great sliding catch on a high pop up to shallow center field to get the second out and continue his great night in the field as well as behind the plate. Hughes then got a swinging strikeout to end the inning.
Kyle Waldrop pitched the seventh inning and allowed a run. He struck out two and made a nice play on a sharp ground ball back to the mound, but allowed a double and an RBI-single to make the score 4-2.
Jim Hoey worked a perfect ninth inning for his fourth save.

This Day in International League History: July 16, 1982 – The skies over Columbus’ Cooper Stadium darken in the middle of a Clippers game against visiting Richmond. At one point, Columbus pitcher Lynn McGlothen points to the skies over the bleachers and shouts “Tornado!” as he bolts for the dugout. His teammates don’t see it, but not taking any chances they race into the dugout behind McGlothen. An instant later a thunderstorm hits, though no funnel cloud ever appears. As fans scurry for cover, a bolt of lightning strikes the tower over the third base grandstand, knocking out the lights and phone lines. In the confusion, an erroneous wire service flash goes out across the nation reporting a tornado hitting the Triple-A Columbus-Richmond game resulting in several fatalities and injuries among the players. CNN reports the story before it is found to be false.
