Mets' Humphreys tosses 10-K shutout

Jordan Humphreys' season couldn't be going much better, but on Wednesday, he somehow managed a new trick.
The Mets' No. 29 prospect struck out 10 in the first shutout of his career as Class A Columbia took the opener of its doubleheader with Charleston, 3-0.

Humphreys (7-1) held the Yankees affiliate to four hits and a walk over seven innings, lowering his ERA to 1.57. He threw 68 of his 99 pitches for strikes and induced three ground outs. The win made him one of only five pitchers in professional baseball with seven victories, joining Major Leaguers Clayton Kershaw, Dallas Keuchel and Ervin Santana as well as Springfield's Jack Flaherty.

Humphreys struck out two in the first and worked around a leadoff single in the second, using a double play from Brandon Wagner. He gave up another leadoff single in the third, struck out two in the fourth, survived a two-out single in the fifth and pitched a flawless sixth. Charleston put two runners on in the seventh as Blake Rutherford's double to left put two men in scoring position, but Humphreys struck out Isiah Gilliam and Wagner before getting Diego Castillo to pop up to first to end the game.
The 20-year-old has allowed two earned runs or fewer in all eight of his starts this season, earning victories in the first seven outings before taking a tough-luck loss in his last appearance May 15. His 10 strikeouts Wednesday were two shy of his season high of 12, which he set April 24 in 6 2/3 innings against Asheville.
Humphreys, the Mets' 18th-round pick in 2015, has been a picture of consistency this season, allowing four hits or fewer in seven of his eight starts. He's worked at least six innings in all but one of his outings and has issued just seven walks in 52 2/3 frames.
The Fireflies took the lead in the fourth with a pair of runs and tacked on one more in the fifth. Michael Paez tripled, singled and knocked in a run and Gene Cone hit an RBI single to plate Jay Jabs in the win. Tim Tebow, starting as the designated hitter, went 0-for-3.
RiverDogs starter Brian Keller (3-4) allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings to suffer the loss. He struck out three.
The shutout was the seventh for Columbia this season and marked the third time Charleston has been held scoreless.

Tim Tebow bounced back from a hitless Game 1 by going 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and two runs scored in Columbia's 10-5 loss in the second game of the doubleheader. Tebow singled and scored in the second and fourth innings, both as the leadoff batter, before getting hit by a pitch on his foot in the fifth by Christian Morris.
Morris, pitching in heavy rain, threw a wild pitch to the next batter and the game was called shortly thereafter.

Tebow, 29, has five hits and three RBIs in his last four games for the Fireflies. He homered on May 21, his third of the season. The left fielder is batting .236 this season.
Ben Ruta and Estevan Florial each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Charleston (23-22) in the win.
