RiverDogs to Honor Charleston Battery, USL Championship Trophy on Friday

CHARLESTON, SC - Throughout the 2010 season, the Charleston RiverDogs have trumpeted to "Be Your Own Fan!" and on Friday, Sept. 3, the club will be a fan of the USL-2 Champion Charleston Battery and will honor our Lowcountry professional sports brother.

 

Ian Fuller, who had an assist and scored the eventual game-winning goal Saturday night while collecting game co-MVP honors, will throw the ceremonial first pitch.  Players will also bring the championship trophy with them to the game for all to see.

 

First pitch for the South Atlantic League game against Greensboro is slated for 7:05 p.m.

 

"We are eager to help our friends at the Charleston Battery celebrate their championship," said RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols.  "Championships on the professional level are a rarity in Charleston, and we feel that this recognition for the Battery and their accomplishments is both deserving and appropriate.  We feel that our fans will enjoy seeing another championship trophy as they did earlier this season when the New York Yankees brought the 2009 World Series trophy to Riley Park."

 

The Charleston Battery were the USL-2 regular season champion and this past Saturday at Blackbaud Stadium defeated the Richmond Kickers, 2-1, for the playoff championship. This marks the third USL title for Charleston having won championships in 1996 and 2003.

Battery forward Lamar Neagle led the league in scoring and was named the league's most valuable player.  Additionally, Coach Mike Anhaeuser earned coach of the year honors.

 

The RiverDogs invite soccer fans in the Lowcountry to enjoy Friday's game versus the Greensboro Grasshoppers and any fan wearing a Battery jersey or youth soccer jersey will receive a $1 discount off their ticket at the box office.
