TEXAS RANGERS ANNOUNCE 2016 HIGH DESERT MAVERICKS FIELD STAFF
ADELANTO, Calif. - The Texas Rangers, Major League parent club of the Advanced-A High Desert Mavericks, today announced the 2016 coaching staff for the Mavericks with three new coaches named to the club. The manager of the Mavericks has not been assigned yet and will be announced at a later date.
Newcomers to the Mavericks field staff include pitching coach Oscar Marin, coach Aaron Levin and athletic trainer Alex Rodriguez. Hitting coach Bobby Rose returns to the Mavericks for his second season, while strength and conditioning coach Anthony Miller is back for his second year in the High Desert.
Marin, 32, joins the Mavericks after spending the last two seasons as the Crawdads pitching coach and sixth full season as a pitching coach. Marin earned his promotion to High-A after he was named South Atlantic League Coach of the Year with Hickory last season following a 2015 South Atlantic League Championship. He originally joined the Texas organization midway through the 2010 campaign and spent the following two campaigns as a pitching coach with the AZL Rangers. Before coming to Texas, he served as pitching coach for Harvard-Westlake preparatory school in North Hollywood, CA from 2008-09. After graduating from Chatsworth (CA) High School, he pitched for the Los Angeles Valley College Monarchs from 2001-02. Marin then went on to pitch for two seasons at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock from 2003-04 and served as a baseball assistant with the baseball program in 2005.
Rose, 48, returns to High Desert for his second year as hitting coach and his fourth season as a hitting instructor with the Texas organization. In 2015, he led the Mavericks offense to second-best team batting average in the California League. Rose made his professional coaching debut with Spokane in 2013. Prior to joining the coaching force, he had an exceptional playing career in Japan with the Yokohoma BayStars and Chiba Lotte Marines in the Japanese Central League from 1993-2000. Rose led the BayStars to a league championship in 1998 and batted .339 with 37 home runs and 153 RBI in 1999, setting a Central League record with 192 hits that was broken six years later. The southern California native was originally selected by the California Angels in the 5th round of the 1985 amateur draft and played eight seasons in the organization.
Levin, 30, another California native, will be in his first year as a coach with the High Desert Mavericks and fourth year with the Texas organization. Levin spent the past two seasons as the manager for the club's Dominican Summer League entry. He was named the organization's Bobby Jones Player Development Man of the Year after leading the DSL Rangers to the best regular season record and second straight DSL title in 2014. He also received DSL Manager of the Year honors. Levin joined the Rangers after stints as an assistant coach with Cuesta College and the head coach of the San Luis Obispo Rattlers in the Golden State Collegiate Baseball League. As a player, he played for the Modi'in Miracle in the Israel Baseball League following two seasons as a first and third baseman at Cuesta.
Rodriguez, 25, begins his first year with the Mavericks as team trainer and fifth season with the Texas organization. He worked last season with the AZL Rangers. The Puerto Rico native was part of two DSL Championship clubs as the trainer for the DSL Rangers from 2012-14. In 2013, Rodriguez was named the DSL Trainer of the Year. He is a 2012 graduate of Barry University in Florida.
Miller, 31, returns for his second season with the Mavericks and sixth season with the Texas organization as a strength and conditioning coach. He began his career in professional baseball as a strength and conditioning coach with the Minnesota organization, working at High-A Ft. Myers in 2008 and Double-A New Britain in 2009. He is certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).
