The Governor's Cup
From 1936-54, the PCL Champion was determined by the Governor's Cup Playoffs, in which the top four teams would advance to face each other in a best-of-seven semi-final and championship round. Due to financial concerns this format was changed in 1951 and 1954 to best-of-three series. Numbers next to teams indicate that team's place in the final regular season standings. Playoff winner is in bold.

Pacific Coast League Expansion I
With the addition of three teams from the American Association, which was disbanded in 1963 and reformed in 1969, the PCL was divided into two divisions, with the winners of each division meeting in a best-of-seven series to determine the champion.

The American Association's rebirth after the 1968 season reduced the PCL from a 12 team league to an eight team league, but the Pacific Coast League maintained its two division format with each winnner meeting in a playoff series to determine a champion.

Pacific Coast League Expansion II
The final dissolution of the American Association caused the PCL to swell to its current size of 16 teams, the largest the League has ever been. The circuit was then split into two eight-team conferences consisting of two four-team divisions. In the playoffs, each division winner meets in a best-of-five conference final round with the winners facing off for the League title in a best-of-five championship round. Playoff winner is in bold
