Signed by the Los Angeles Angels as an undrafted free agent on July 15, 2021 out of the MLB Draft League... made his Minor League debut on July 29, 2021 with Inland Empire at San Jose... promoted to Double-A Rocket City on Sept. 9, 2021 and made his Double-A debut on Sept. 12 at Birmingham... became the first MLB Draft League player to reach Double-A when he debuted with Rocket City... hit .344 with four homers and 17 RBIs in 21 games with the Trenton Thunder in the newly-formed MLB Draft League in 2021

Appeared in nine games with San Diego State in 2021, hitting .276 with a homer and seven RBIs in 29 at-bats from May 15-29... prior to San Diego State, Matthews played one year at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California, as a redshirt sophomore, helping the Gauchos to a 16-5 record before the remainder of 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic... hit .395 with two homers, 14 RBIs, 26 runs and eight stolen bases in 2020... prior to Saddleback, he started 29 of 33 games as a freshman in 2019 at BYU in his only season with the Cougars, hitting .250 with two homers and 17 RBIs.

Led Capistrano Valley Christian High to three conference titles and received first-team all-San Joaquin League recognition on three occasions as the team's captain... earned a No. 24 ranking among shortstops for the class of 2018 recruits in California by Perfect Game and was rated 120th overall in the state... originally from San Clemente, Calif... son of Steve and Heidi Matthews... his uncle, Mitch Hoopes, played in Super Bowl X for the Dallas Cowboys as a punter.
