Signed with the Philadelphia Phillies as an undrafted free agent out of Harborfields (NY) High School on Aug. 12, 2020... in his first professional season, he gave up just one run over 9 2/3 relief innings in 2021 for the Rookie-level Phillies of the Florida Complex League... was diagnosed with cancer in April 2022 at age 19... initially doctors believed it was non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, but as treatment failed they realized it was a more rare and aggressive cancer called T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (T-ALL)... the Phillies paid tribute to Phelan's battle in April by naming him the organization's Minor League Pitcher of the Month alongside Andrew Painter... the Clearwater Threshers, Philadelphia's Florida State League affiliate, honored Phelan in May 2022 during the club's Strike Out Cancer game... the Phillies announced Phelan's passing on Oct. 13, 2022. "Corey's positive presence and selflessness influenced everyone around him. While he was incredibly passionate about the game of baseball, his love for his family and his strong faith superseded everything else," the Phillies said in a statement.
