After his Major League debut on Aug. 5, 2020, Alvarez became the first Winter Olympian and the first non-baseball Olympian since Jim Thorpe to play Major League Baseball... only Alvarez and Thorpe have played Major League Baseball and won an Olympic Medal in another sport... Thorpe won gold medals in 1912 at Stockholm in decathlon and in pentathlon before a career in the Majors that included time with the New York Giants, Cincinnati Reds and Boston Braves... Thorpe also played in the Minors until 1922, including with Triple-A Toledo... Alvarez won a silver medal with Team USA in baseball at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo... Alvarez placed second in the 500 meters and 1500 meters, and third in the 1000 meters at the 2014 United States Olympic Speed Skating Trials. The performance earned him the honor of becoming the first Cuban-American male speed skater to make a U.S. Olympic Team... skated at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, where he was a silver medalist in men's 5000m relay short-track, 11th in men's 1000m, 19th in men's 1500m and 31st in men's 500m... Alvarez has also competed at the 2013 US Championships, World Cup and World Championships... made the United States' World Cup Team in December 2012 and finished the season as the country's third highest ranked skater... made the 2008 and 2009 World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Championships, winning the Gold medal in the 3k Relay at the 2009 Jr. World Championships... after missing the 2010 Olympics, he returned to baseball in an attempt to give his knees a break after years of chronic pain... he became an All-Conference shortstop at Salt Lake Community College... his older brother, Nick, played outfield and first base for seven years (2000-06) with the Dodgers organization reaching the Triple-A level, which Eddy did as well in 2022 at Oklahoma City... Nick also played in Jacksonville for three seasons when the Jumbo Shrimp were known as the Suns and a part of the Dodgers farm system.

2020

Eduardo Cortes Alvarez made his Major League debut on Aug. 5, 2020, in Baltimore...After going hitless in his first three games, he recorded his first hit on Aug. 9 against Jacob deGrom. He finished that game 3x4 (2x2 against deGrom) with a double and a stolen base against the Mets at Citi Field...Placed on the Paternity List on Aug. 21 (16 days after MLB debut) for the birth of his first child, a son named Jett...One of 18 players make their MLB debuts in 2020. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, that set a new single-season Franchise record (defeating 16 in 2010).

2019

Eduardo Cortes Alvarez played 66 games for Triple-A New Orleans in 2019, his first year with the Marlins organization.

2018

Spent all of 2018 with the Triple-A Charlotte in the White Sox organization, playing 101 games and batting .253 with 26 doubles, 3 triples, eight home runs, and 37 RBI.

2017

Combined to hit .235 (101x429) with 16 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 39 RBI over 126 games between Double-A Birmingham and Charlotte in 2017.

2016

Combined to hit .265 (114x430) with 19 doubles, three triples, six home runs, 65 RBI, 11 stolen bases and 58 runs scored over 116 games between Birmingham and Charlotte in 2016.

2015

Batted a combined .296 (133x450) with 29 doubles, seven triples, five home runs, 53 RBI, 88 runs scored and 53 stolen bases over 123 games between Single-A Kannapolis and Single-A Winston-Salem in 2015...Ranked seventh among White Sox organizational leaders in walks (50) and 10th in runs scored while leading the Barons with 62 RBI.

2014

Combined to hit .346 (63-182 with 11 doubles, five home runs, 26 RBI, 32 runs scored and nine stolen bases over 45 games between Arizona Rookie League White Sox and Kannapolis in 2014...He was named a SAL Midseason All-Star while leading Kannapolis in walks, runs (64), steals (42), doubles (23), on-base percentage and batting average (.285)...Ranked second in the South Atlantic League in on-base percentage (.408), third in walks (69) and sixth in stolen bases (42).

2012

In 2012, underwent surgery to repair torn patellar tendons that left him completely immobile for four weeks.
