Brieger’s second homer is made possible when his base hit down the left field line gets lost in the tall weeds and can not be recovered before he rounds the bases.
August 1, 1992: At Reading, Steve Bieser gets hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home Tony Trevino with the winning run in the bottom of the 13th inning as Reading beats New Britain, 11-10. The Phillies had built a 10-1 lead by the 3rd inning against Aaron Sele, the Red Sox’s no. 1 pick in the 1991 draft. Sele gives up 10 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits and 5 walks while hitting 3 batters. Outfielder John Escobar is 3-for-7 with a double and 4 RBI and throws out a potential go-ahead run in the 10th.
August 1, 1995: At New Haven, the Reading Phillies and New Haven Ravens do battle for the final time in the 1995 regular season, with the Phils scoring two in the 9th to pull out a 5-3 win. The next time the teams would meet would be in the best-of-five EL Championship Series.
August 1, 2012: At Richmond, catcher Tommy Joseph switches locker rooms after being traded by the Giants to the Phillies the previous day and goes 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored against his former teammates. Reading prevails, 7-4.
August 1, 2021: In Reading, the R-Phils lost a rainy contest against the Somerset Patriots 4-3. Despite the game itself only taking three hours and four minutes, the Fightins faithful had to endure a two-hour 46-minute delay in between the eighth and ninth inning which had the game nearly leak into Monday morning. Although the R-Phils lost, Phillies 21st Prospect Jhailyn Ortiz was the night’s winner, as he recorded his first Double-A hit with a bomb to left for one of his three hits on the evening
August 1, 2023: At Hartford, the R-Phils bats explode for a 9-4 win over the Yard Goats. Carlos De La Cruz drove in three runs, and Oliver Dunn had three hits (triple shy of cycle) and four RBI. Josh Hendrickson matched a career-high, and set a season-high, with eight strikeouts. The bullpen remained hot with four-shutout innings in the series-opening win. Additionally, no members of the 2023 R-Phils were involved in any trade deadline day deals. Jersey Shore’s Hao Yu Lee (No. 5 Prospect) was sent to Detroit for Michael Lorenzen, and Lehigh Valley’s Bailey Falter was dealt to Pittsburgh for Rodolfo Castro.
August 1, 2024: At Reading, the Fightin Phils hit three home runs in the bottom of the second inning, as they fall to New Hampshire 5-4. Leandro Pineda, Robert Moore, and Ethan Wilson all homer in the inning, with the three home runs coming in four at-bats. Moore and Wilson also went back-to-back.
August 2, 1932: Reading catchers Ernie Krueger and Doc Legett wrap up an amazing five-day, seven-game hitting exhibition – totaling 17 hits in 24 at bats (.708) with 5 home runs, 9 runs scored, 15 RBI, 2 doubles, and a triple between them. Krueger wraps out 12 hits in 12 consecutive trips to the plate over four games against Jersey City and Montreal. His spree includes 2 home runs, 5 runs scored, 6 RBI, and 2 doubles. Legett goes 5-for-11 with 3 home runs, 4 runs, 9 RBI, and a triple in his three games. The Keys win six of the seven games: 9-8, 8-5, 11-10, 11-8, 10-15, 7-2, & 9-2…also August 2, 1932: Montreal’s Jimmy Ripple gets credit for a home run off Reading’s Al Shealy when his drive to center disappears into a drain pipe that ran underneath the concrete wall.
August 2, 1994: At Reading, David Fisher and Phil Geisler each knock in four runs in the Phils’ 8-7 win over New Britain.
August 2, 1995: At Trenton, Thunder lead-off hitter Nomar Garciaparra hits a grand slam in the second inning to lead the Thunder past Reading, 7-2.
August 2, 1997: At Portland, Reading scores a run on an error in the top of the 13th to defeat the Sea Dogs, 11-10, in a game that lasts 4:23.
August 2, 1998: At Reading, light-hitting Matt Guiliano (.186 at the time) swats a pair of home runs and Doug Angeli drives in four as the Phillies paste Harrisburg, 11-2.
August 2, 2003: At Reading, the Phillies steal nine bases without being caught in a 7-1 victory over Trenton. Buzz Hannahan leads the way with four swipes, followed by Josue Perez and Anderson Machado with two each and Jay Sitzman with one. Willie Glen pitches seven scoreless innings for the win.
August 2, 2011: At Reading, pinch-hitter Steve Singleton smacks a grand slam on the first pitch he sees as a Reading Phillie to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 6-4 lead as the R-Phils go on to beat the Senators, 8-4. Singleton, released by the Twins organization in early June, would play 26 more games with Reading without hitting another home run.
August 2, 2015: At New Hampshire, Reading begins what would be a 10-game winning streak with an 8-2 victory over the Fisher Cats as Brian Pointer goes 2-for-3 with a homer, 3 RBI and 2 runs. A loss would have dropped Reading into 4th place. Instead, they moved into a tie for 2nd and never fell out of playoff position the rest of the season. It was also the first of 21 victories in August.
August 2, 2023: At Hartford, Oliver Dunn has a career-night as the R-Phils win 8-2 over the Yard Goats. Dunn has three extra-base this for the second time that season and in his career. He also hit two home runs, which was his second multi-homer game of the season and his career. Dunn also drove in five runs, which set a career high. Jhailyn Ortiz and Baron Radcliff homered (Ortiz and Dunn went back-to-back in the fifth), while five relievers allowed just two runs in a bullpen-game victory.
August 2, 2024: At Reading, the Fightin Phils use a six-run eighth inning to an 8-2 win over the Hartford Yard Goats. Robinson Pina surpassed 100 strikeouts on the season in a 6.2 inning no-decision, with one-earned run allowed. Marcus Lee Sang and Caleb Ricketts hit solo home runs early, while Ethan Wilson hit a three-run homer in the eighth.
August 3, 1932: Reading’s stay in the International League ends when manager Clarence Rowland transfers the team, then 50-66, to Albany, NY. The Keys lose a pair to Montreal, 11-7 and 10-4, on their final day in Reading.
August 3, 1955: At Reading, Frank Tanana and Jack Waters extend their hitting streaks to 20 and 19 games, respectively, in the Indians’ 11-6 loss to Elmira. The streaks were the two longest in the EL to that point in the season.
August 3, 1967: At Baltimore, the Reading Phillies drop their 7th straight game, losing to Elmira 10-1 in a home game played at the Orioles’ Memorial Stadium. Leroy Reams 9th inning RBI double is the only thing that prevents a double-digit whitewashing at the hands of the Pioneers.
August 3, 1996: At Reading, Doug Angeli’s RBI single with one out in the bottom of the 9th inning defeats Harrisburg, 2-1.
August 3, 1997: At Portland, the Phils and Sea Dogs go 12 more innings the afternoon after playing a 13-inning night contest. Each team plates a solo run in the 11th and the Sea Dogs’ Ryan Jackson ends it with a 2-run homer. The final is 8-6.
August 3, 1998: At Reading, the Phils beat Trenton, 7-3, on the strength of four home runs. Matt Guiliano, Brandon Marsters, Doug Angeli and Israel Alcanatra all go deep.
August 3, 1999: At Reading, Pat Burrell walks in his first four trips to the plate, then drills a game-winning 2-run homer in the bottom of the 9th to lift the Phils past Altoona, 5-4.
August 3, 2003: At Reading, the Phillies rally from a 7-2 deficit to beat Trenton, 8-7 in 10 innings. The win completes a four-game sweep of the Thunder, who had swept Reading four straight just a week and a half earlier in Trenton. Josue Perez singles past first to bring Nate Espy home with the winning run.
August 3, 2007: At Reading, the Phillies rally for two in the bottom of the 9th after surrendering a one-run lead in the top of the 9th to beat Binghamton, 6-5. Michael Garciaparra’s one-out pinch-hit single drives in Shaun Boyd with the game winner.
August 3, 2011: At Reading, Austin Hyatt strikes out 12 Harrisburg Senators in 6.0 innings and allows only one run on three hits but does not get a decision in a game that is later suspended and completed the following day.
August 3, 2012: At Reading, Ethan Martin wins his R-Phils debut, allowing 1 run on 4 hits and a walk in 6.0 innings as the R-Phils beat Binghamton, 4-1. Martin, acquired at the July 31 trade deadline in a move that sent Shane Victorino to the Dodgers, strikes out 6. Darin Ruf swats two solo home runs, his first two HRs in what would be a record-setting month.
August 3, 2013: At Trenton, Alex Rodriguez continues to prepare for his Major League comeback, homering off Jesse Biddle in the 3rd inning of the Thunder’s 6-2 win at Arm & Hammer Park.
August 3, 2016: At Reading, Dylan Cozens has one of the most impressive games in franchise history, setting a record with 15 total bases in a 13-0 hammering of Bowie. Cozens goes 4-for-5 with 3 home runs, a triple, 7 RBIs, 4 runs scored and even a stolen base. The homers are his 28th, 29th and 30th of the season, making Cozens and Rhys Hoskins the first teammates in Reading’s history to reach 30 or more homers in the same year. Despite the 3-homer game, Cozens fails to catch Hoskins for the league lead as the 1st baseman swats his 31st HR. Adding to the power surge is Jake Fox, who becomes the third player on the team to reach 20 home runs with a solo shot in the 6th inning.
August 3, 2023: At Hartford, Phillies No. 4 Prospect Griff McGarry is named Eastern League Pitcher of the Month just prior to making his final start with Reading. McGarry would be promoted to triple-A Lehigh Valley the following day.
August 3, 2024: At Reading, the Fightin Phils fall 3-0 in Phillies No. 10 Prospect Seth Johnson’s Reading debut after being acquired in a trade with the Orioles earlier in the week. Johnson surrenders three runs over 3.2 innings and takes the loss. Reading was shutout for the first time in 61 games, which was the longest streak in Double-A this season, up to that point. Reading hits into a triple play when Josh Breaux popped up to first base and the infield fly rule was called. Hartford first baseman Zach Kokoska dropped the ball and Justin Crawford tried to advance home on the drop, but was thrown out at the plate. Otto Kemp then tried to advance to second, but was also thrown out. It was the first triple play at FirstEnergy Stadium since Reading turned one on Sept. 9, 2022, against New Hampshire.
August 4, 1918: At Lauer’s Park, Shoeless Joe Jackson hits two home runs and drives in three to lift the Reading Steel Casting Company to a 6-1 win over Warwick A.A. in the Industrial League. Lefty Williams, Jackson’s roommate and another banned member of the 1919 White Sox, strikes out 14 in eight innings of relief for the win.
August 4, 1996: At Reading, Harrisburg erupts for 10 runs in the 2nd inning of an 18-2 blowout. The Phillies go through seven pitchers in the game.
August 4, 2005: At Akron, Ryan Fleming hits a grand slam in the 3rd inning, then delivers the go-ahead single in the 12th as Reading defeats Akron, 7-4. Chris Roberson’s two-run single caps the scoring and Sean Fesh tosses three scoreless innings to pick up the win.
August 4, 2011: At Reading, in the completion of a game suspended by rain the night before, John Suomi scores the winning run when Ozzie Chavez gets caught in a rundown stealing 2nd base in the 10th inning while Harrisburg neglects to pay any attention to Suomi. The Phillies’ 2-1 win is reversed in the second game of the day as Harrisburg also prevails, 2-1. Neither team manages an RBI on the day.
August 4, 2015: At Trenton, Nick Williams and Jake Thompson, acquired in the trade that sent Cole Hamels to Texas, make their Fightin Phils debut in a 7-1 win. Thompson allows just one earned run on 6 hits and no walks while striking out 1 over 7.0 innings for the victory and Williams goes 2-for-5 in the leadoff slot. Andrew Knapp swats two doubles (giving him 6 in 4 games) and a single, driving in 3 and scoring 1. Chase Utley rehabs with the team and goes 1-for-4 with 2 runs. The win breaks a tie for 2nd place in the Eastern Division.
August 4, 2016: At Reading, the Fightin Phils rally from a 4-run 1st inning hole to beat Bowie, 12-8. Rhys Hoskins, Dylan Cozens and Andrew Pullin all hit 2 home runs and Cozens becomes the 10th player in franchise history to top 100 RBIs in a season. Hoskins is 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs; Cozens goes 3-for-4 with a grand slam, triple, 5 RBIs and 3 runs; and Pullin finishes 3-for-4, with a double, 2 RBIs and 3 runs. Mitch Walding, making his Double-A debut, scores twice and gives the team its 7th homer of the night.
August 4, 2017: At Reading, Akron scores multiple runs in two different innings without getting a hit, plating 2 in the 2nd and 3 in the 7th as they pound the Fightin Phils, 14-4. In the bizarre 7th, the RubberDucks draw 6 walks and strike out 3 times, with none of the batters putting the ball in play. Akron’s Taylor Murphy, in his first action of the season, is hit by a pitch his first two trips to the plate and homers in his third
August 4, 2023: At Hartford, Reading shuts out the Yard Goats for their second-shutout win of the season. Mick Abel gets the start and goes 5.1 innings, while the bullpen combined for 3.2 scoreless frames. Oliver Dunn's hot week continues with two hits and a homer, while Matthew Kroon matched a season-high with four hits.
August 5, 1908: At North 11th Street Grounds, Bill Clay’s RBI single chases home Harry Barton with the winning score, capping a three-run 9th inning rally as Reading tops Trenton, 4-3. Frank “Home Run” Baker collects three hits, one of which is a controversial bunt single in the midst of the final rally.
August 5, 1955: At Binghamton, Jack Waters goes 1-for-5 and extends his hitting streak to 21 games in Reading’s 7-5 victory over the Triplets. Teammate Frank Tanana had set the mark for the league’s longest tear (20) just two days before.

August 5, 2002: At Akron, Reading beats the Aeros, 2-0, in 14 innings. Nate Espy hits a solo HR in the top of the 14th to break the scoreless tie. Jason Johnson singles home the second run. Mark Outlaw gets the win; Frank Brooks the save. Franklin Perez starts and lasts 8 innings for Reading.
August 5, 2004: At Harrisburg, Kevin Barker extends his hitting streak to 19 games by going 2-for-3 in the first game of a double-header. His hit streak ends in game two, however, as he finishes 0-for-1 with a pair of walks.
August 5, 2007: At Reading, Mike Costanzo launches a pair of home runs and drives in three as the R-Phils overwhelm Binghamton, 13-8, on a Sunday night. Peeter Ramos goes 3-for-5 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored.
August 5, 2009: At Reading, an all-time record crowd of 9,953 packs FirstEnergy Stadium to see Pedro Martinez continue his comeback to Major League Baseball. Martinez picks up the win, going 6.0 innings, giving up 4 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits and striking out 11 Trenton hitters. All nine Thunder starters are fanned by Martinez at least once. Also, top prospect Domonic Brown connects for his first Double-A home run in the 1st inning, sending a rocket over the pool pavilion and out onto Centre Avenue.
August 5, 2014: At Reading, Zach Collier homers for the 4th straight game and the 5th time over that span in a 3-2 win over Harrisburg. Also that night, public address announcer Justin Choate is hit in the back by a foul ball that finds its way into the press box.
August 5, 2015: At Trenton, Nick Williams puts on a clinic in his second game for the Fightin Phils, going 4-for-4 with a pair of home runs, double, walk, 3 RBI, 5 runs and a stolen base in an 11-1 victory. Andrew Knapp registers his 5th straight multi-hit game and also homers twice for Reading, ending up 2-for-5 with 3 RBI. Chase Utley, on rehab from Philadelphia, is 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and a run scored.
August 5, 2023: At Hartford, Reading wins its fifth-striaght game, setting a new season high. David Parkinson goes six innings and allows no-earned runs. Jhailyn Ortiz sets a season-high with two homers and matches a career best. Ortiz also has a season-high five RBI in the win.
August 6, 1967: At Reading, Charley Green’s RBI double in the bottom of the 12th lifts Reading past Williamsport, 5-4, and moves the R-Phils past Elmira into second place in the EL’s Western Division.
August 6, 1992: At Reading, Ron Lockett goes 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles in a 4-3 loss to Binghamton.
August 6, 1994: At Reading, the Phillies use two 6-run innings (2nd and 6th) to out-slug Harrisburg, 14-8. Tommy Greene makes a rehab start and allows a lead-off 1st inning homer to Mark Grudzielanek. Greene also hits an RBI double.

August 6, 2013: At Harrisburg, Reading rallies for 2 runs in the top of the 9th to tie the game and ultimately beats the Senators, 4-3 in 12 innings. Matt Tolbert walks and eventually scores on Albert Cartwright’s sac fly as the Phils manufacture the game-winning run without getting a hit in the 12th.
August 6, 2014: At Reading, Aaron Nola, a 1st round pick that June, wins his Double-A debut and gets a bunt single in his first pro at-bat. Jake Fox goes 2-for-4 with a homer a 4 RBI in the 9-2 decision.
August 6, 2015: At Trenton, an 8-1 win completes the Fightin Phils’ dominating 3-game sweep and deals a major blow to the Thunder’s playoff hopes. J.P. Crawford is the offensive star, going 3-for-5 with a double, 4 RBI and a run scored while Joely Rodriguez holds Trenton to just one hit over 5.0 scoreless innings to pick up the win. Reading outscores the Thunder 26-3 in the 3-game set.
August 6, 2016: At Reading, the Fightin Phils lose 2-1 in 10 innings to Altoona, but Rhys Hoskins reaches 100 RBIs with his 34th HR of the season. He and Dylan Cozens become the first Reading Phils teammates to reach the century mark in RBIs in the same season.
August 7, 1919: At Lauer’s Park in Reading, Buffalo hurler Pat Ryan starts and completes both ends of a double-header, tossing a no-hitter in game two. The Bisons take the first contest, 9-4 and the 7-inning nightcap, 7-0.
August 7, 1953 – At Reading, Joe Caffie drives in Bob Moscrey with the winning run as the Indians rally for two in the bottom of the 9th to beat Binghamton, 6-5.
August 7, 1967: At the Abraham Lincoln Hotel, Phillies president Ruly Carpenter and farm director Paul Owens announce that the Phils have renewed their stadium lease with the city of Reading for the 1968 season. Carpenter and Owens are “extremely pleased with the Reading operation” and would be “extremely pleased if renewal becomes feasible on an annual basis”.
August 7, 1998: At Harrisburg, Israel Alcantara goes 3-for-5 with 2 HR, 5 RBI and 2 runs to lead Reading past the Senators, 11-4. David Francia goes 3-for-4 with a HR and 4 runs.
August 7, 2003: At New Britain, the Phillies set a franchise record for hit batters in a season when Ryan Hutchison plunks B.J. Garbe in the 10th inning of a 10-9, 11-inning loss to the Rock Cats. Garbe is the 71st opponent hit by Phillies pitchers, breaking the old mark of 70 set by the 1999 staff.
August 7, 2014: At Reading, a power outage minutes before the start of the Fightin Phils’ game against Harrisburg causes the first 2 innings to be played without electricity. Public address announcer Justin Choate announces batters from atop the 1b dugout with a makeshift megaphone. Luckily, the power is restored before the lights are needed and the game is able to be completed without delay as Reading prevails, 3-0.
August 7, 2015: At Reading, Rene Garcia’s pinch-hit infield single just beyond the pitcher’s reach scores Andrew Knapp in the 10th inning as the Fightin Phils nip New Britain, 4-3. It is Reading’s 3rd straight walk-off win at home. The Rock Cats held a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the 8th but Reading tied it on a 2-run double by Knapp and an RBI single by Angelo Mora.
August 7, 2016: At Reading, Rhys Hoskins sets a club record by drawing a walk in each of his 5 plate appearances as the Fightin Phils rip Altoona, 14-0, drawing 12 free passes as a team. Hoskins also scores once and drives in a run. Andrew Pullin goes 2-for-5 with a homer, 4 RBIs and 2 runs while Gabriel Lino is 3-for-5 with a home run, 3 RBIs and 3 runs. Nick Pivetta strikes out 5 over 5.0 scoreless innings to pick up his 11th win in his final start for Reading.
August 7, 2017: At Reading, the Morning Game is delayed by 1:49 as the teams wait for the outfield to dry out after overnight and early morning rains. Akron wins, 6-2, with the final out being made at 2:04 in the afternoon
August 7, 2024: At Akron, the Fightin Phils fall to the RubberDucks 8-6, despite Reading outhitting Akron 15-6. Taijuan Walker started for Reading as his rehab start for Lehigh Valley was rained out the night before. Rather than wait out the weather in Pennsylvania, Walker traveled to Akron to pitch for Reading. Walker goes five-strong innings, allowing one run on two hits, with three strikeouts. Justin Crawford has three hits and two RBI, while Robert Moore and Otto Kemp also have three hits in the loss.
August 8, 1953 – At Reading, Billy Joe Davidson pitches a 3-hit shutout to lead the Indians past first place Binghamton, 9-0, in game one of a double header. Game two is won by the Triplets, 4-3, as Binghamton maintains a two game lead in the standings.
August 8, 1967: At Reading, the R-Phils leave an astounding 19 men on base in a frustrating 6-4 loss to Williamsport. All nine Reading starters collect a hit, but at least one Phillie remains aboard at the end of every inning and no less than two are marooned from the 2nd through the end of the game. No Eastern League records existed for LOB at the time, but no National League team had ever left more than 18 on in any game in its 92-year history (through 2010, 18 was still the NL record.).
August 8, 1990: At Reading, the R-Phils beat London, 6-1, behind a complete game 5-hitter from Andy Ashby. Ashby does not allow a walk and strikes out 4, beginning what would be a streak of 30 straight scoreless innings after surrendering a run in the top of the 1st.
August 8, 1997: At Reading, Akron scores seven in the 2nd, four on a grand slam by Sean Casey, to win 13-7 at Reading.
August 8, 2000: At Reading, Brandon Duckworth has a career day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double, a run scored and 4 RBI in Reading’s 15-5 trouncing of Altoona. He lasts five innings and gives up three runs to pick up the win. The Phils score all their runs in the first four innings, including six in the 1st and eight in the 4th. All nine Reading starters have at least one hit.
August 8, 2004: At Reading, Danny Gonzalez singles home Sean Walsh with one out in the bottom of the 12th to defeat Erie, 6-5. Kevin Barker had tied the game with a 2-run homer in the 8th and Erie kept the game alive in the 9th by throwing out two Phillies runners at the plate.
August 8, 2005: At Trenton, Chris Roberson walks with one out in the 9th inning, steals second and scores on Ryan Barthelemy’s pinch-hit single to right field to provide the winning run in Reading’s 3-2 triumph over the Thunder. Chris Rojas (5.0 IP) and three relievers combine to limit Trenton to just three hits.
August 8, 2014: At Reading, Zach Collier hits 2 more home runs, the second a walk-off shot in the bottom of the 10th, to lift Reading past Altoona, 3-2. The homers, his last of the season, give him 7 in the span of 6 games after he had hit just 2 over his first 62 games. The win is Reading’s 9th in 11 extra-inning games.
August 8, 2015: At Reading, the Fightin Phils storm back from a 2-run 9th inning deficit to beat New Britain, 9-6, as Andrew Knapp’s 3-run homer caps a 5-run rally. Brock Stassi goes 4-for-5 with a homer, 3 RBI and 3 runs while Knapp is 3-for-5 with 3 RBI and 2 runs. The win, which seemed unlikely when New Britain held a 5-1 lead after 5, is the Phils’ 6th straight overall and their 4th straight walk-off victory at home.
August 9, 1955: At Reading, the Indians defeat the best players from the Eastern League’s seven other teams in the first All-Star Game played at Municipal Stadium. Reading lofts three home runs in the 6-5 win: a leadoff shot by Jack Waters in the 1st, a solo homer by Joe Randazzo later in the opening frame and a two-run blast by Carroll Hardy in the 7th that puts the game out of reach. Hardy, who was playing his last game with the Indians (he would join the San Francisco 49ers as a defensive back) is the game’s star, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, three runs scored and two outstanding catches in center field in the 4th inning. Roger Maris is sidelined with a foot injury and does not play
August 9, 1995: At Reading, Gary Bennett knocks in four runs and Larry Mitchell throws eight shutout innings to lead the Phils past Trenton, 10-0.
August 9, 1997: At Reading, Dan Held goes 4-for-4 with two singles, a double and a triple in a 10-5 win over Akron.
August 9, 2000: At Reading, all nine Reading starters collect at least one hit for the second straight game as Reading beats Altoona, 7-5. Starting pitcher Jimmy Osting goes 1-for-2 but leaves after 5 innings with a no-decision.
August 9, 2012: At Trenton, Adam Morgan tosses 7.0 shutout innings, giving up just one hit and two walks while striking out 5 to win his Double-A debut. The 4-1 win moves Reading a half game ahead of New Britain for the Eastern Division’s second playoff spot.
August 9, 2015: At Reading, Jake Thompson wins his first start at FirstEnergy Stadium, allowing one earned run on 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 3 over 7.0 solid innings as the Fightin Phils complete a 3-game sweep of New Britain with a 4-1 victory. Andrew Knapp goes 3-for-4 with a solo homer and 2 runs while Harold Martinez is 3-for-3 with a solo HR of his own. Stephen Shackleford tosses a scoreless 9th to record his 24th save, tying the franchise single-season mark.
August 9, 2016: At Binghamton, Rhys Hoskins hits his 35th home run (2-for-4, 3 RBI, 2 R) to retain the league lead in an 8-2 win over B-Mets.
August 10, 1919: Due to an injunction secured by property owners near Lauer’s Park that prohibited baseball on the Sabbath, Reading is forced to move its Sunday game vs. Binghamton to Carsonia Park. The Marines, who had not won a home Sunday game all season, respond by erupting for 11 runs in the 7th to beat the Cobblers, 16-4. Every Reading player has at least one hit, with Bud Weiser’s four leading the way. An estimated 8,000 fans are in attendance.
August 10, 1929: At Lauer’s Park, Reading Keys’ outfielder George Quellich goes 6-for-6 with a two-run homer and hits safely in his ninth straight at bat in Reading’s 19-0 blowout of Montreal. He also steals two bases.
August 10, 1940: At Lauer’s Park in Reading, the Reading Chicks top York, 5-1, with the help of five double plays. Pitcher Bill Gates, the beneficiary of the strong defensive effort, helps his own cause by picking two other runners off first base. Gates goes the distance on a four-hitter.
August 10, 1953 – At Williamsport, the Indians become the first team in modern Reading history to win three games in one day. They win the completion of a suspended game, 5-4, in eight innings, then take both ends of a scheduled double-header, 7-3 and 5-4 (13 innings). Rod Graber is the day’s hero: he singles home the game-winning run and makes a game-saving catch against the wall in final inning of the first game…hits a two-run homer in the second game…and scores the game-winner in the 13th inning of the third contest. Murph Murszewski gets the win in the first two games. Reading, which starts the day two games behind Binghamton, picks up 2½ games and vaults into first place.
August 10, 1984: The R-Phils plaster Waterbury, 21-6, as Jim Olander collects four RBIs on four hits, including a home run.
August 10, 1997: At Reading, a nine-run 4th gives Akron an 18-6 win over the Phils. The Aeros have five doubles and seven home runs among their 18 hits.
August 10, 2006: At Reading, Gary Burnham homers twice and drives in four runs as the Phils hold off Bowie, 7-6. For Burnham, the homers are his 50th and 51st in an R-Phils uniform, placing him second on the all-time Reading franchise list.
August 10, 2010: At Akron, the R-Phils hammer the Aeros with 18 hits in an 11-0 thrashing at Canal Park. Michael Spidale goes 4-for-6 with a double, two runs and an RBI while Timo Perez is 4-for-5 with two doubles, a run and four RBIs.
August 10, 2018: Pitcher McKenzie Mills is promoted to Reading at noon, then is traded to the Marlins for infielder Justin Bour less than three hours later. Mills had flown into Philadelphia from Clearwater only to have to board another plane so he could head to Jacksonville to join Miami’s Double-A affiliate. That night, Cornelius Randolph hits a 3-run, pinch-hit homer in the bottom of the 9th to give Reading a 5-2 win over Binghamton.
August 10, 2023: At New Hampshire, Reading falls 11-8 in a rain-shortened seven-inning game. Nick Ward steals the show in just his second start with Reading. Ward goes three-for-three, with three runs, a double, two homers and five RBI. The three runs match a career high, and three extra-base hits, two homers and five RBI set new career highs for Ward, who played his college baseball at West Chester University and is from Kennett Square, PA. Ward also hit a leadoff home run and went deep in back-to-back at bats. Oliver Dunn continued his hot August with a home run and three RBI. Phillies No. 2 Prospect Mick Abel started and went five innings.
August 10, 2024: At Akron, the Fightin Phils earn their first doubleheader sweep since Sept. 7, 2022. Reading wins 6-3 in game one behind six innings from Robinson Pina, as he earns his 12th win of the season, becoming the first R-Phil to win 12 games since Austin Hyatt in 2011. The Fightin Phils win 11-4 in game two as Justin Crawford hits a grand slam. Gabriel Rincones Jr. had a home run in both ends of the doubleheader and for the third-straight game.
August 10, 2024: In Phoenix, 2024 Fightin Phil Max Lazar makes his Major League debut with 1.1-scoreless innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
August 11, 1918: At Lauer’s Park, Shoeless Joe Jackson hits a two-run homer over the right field fence in the 8th inning to lift the Reading Steel Casting Company to a 3-1 victory over Chester Shipbuilding. Lefty Williams goes the distance and strikes out nine for the win.
August 11, 1929: At Lauer’s Park, George Quellich extends his consecutive hits streak to 13 with a 4-for-4 performance against Montreal. Two of his hits in the 11-4 victory are solo home runs.

August 11, 1996: At Reading, David Fisher hits a pinch-hit solo home run in the 8th inning to lead the Phillies to a 3-2 win over Portland.
August 11, 2000: At Akron, Reading out-slugs the Aeros, 16-7, as the Phils bang out 20 hits. Pete Rose, Jr. leads the way with a 5-for-6 performance. He also has 2 doubles, 3 R and 2 RBI. Brian Harris goes 4-for-6.
August 11, 2006: At Reading, Jason Jaramillo’s RBI double in the second inning is enough offense for Zack Segovia (7.0 IP, 2 H, 7 K) and two relievers as the Phillies whitewash Harrisburg, 1-0.
August 11, 2010: At Akron, the R-Phils score all seven of their runs on just two hits in the 2nd inning, then hold on to beat the Aeros, 7-6. Akron starter Anthony Reyes walks the first four batters in the top of the 2nd and unleashes three wild pitches. He ends up surrendering seven earned runs on just one hit in his 1.0+ inning.
August 11, 2013: At Reading, Maikel Franco goes 3-for-4, scores twice and hits the Fightin Phils’ only grand slam of the season in a 14-5 pasting of New Britain. All nine Reading starters collect at least one of the team’s 16 hits and all but Justin Dalles score at least once.
August 11, 2015: At Reading, a 6-run lead for Harrisburg isn’t nearly enough for the Senators as the Fightin Phils rally to win their 8th straight game, 11-8. Still trailing 8-3 in the 7th, the Phils bat around, scoring 8 times as every hitter but Art Charles (who bats twice as a pinch hitter) touches home in the frame. Harold Martinez’s 2-run single gives Reading its first lead of the game. Nick Williams homers for the first time at FirstEnergy Stadium and goes 2-for-5 with a double, 3 RBI and 2 runs while Andrew Knapp drives in a run for the 9th straight game. Stephen Shackleford puts an exclamation on the come-from-behind victory by saving his 25th game to set the franchise single-season record. The game ends when Jose Lozada is erased at second trying to stretch a single into a double, with Cameron Perkins getting the assist.
August 11, 2018: At Reading, Deivi Grullon’s 2-run homer in the bottom of the 8th lifts the Fightin Phils to a 4-3 win over Binghamton. It would be the first of 4 straight games with a homer for Grullon.
August 11, 2023: At New Hampshire, the R-Phils win 6-1 behind six-shutout innings from David Parkinson. The lefty continued to shine, as he moved to 5-0 with a 1.30 ERA over his last six outings. Carlos De La Cruz hit his 20th home run of the season, marking the first time in his career he hit 20-plus homers.
August 11, 2023: In Philadelphia, former Fightin Phil Johan Rojas hits his first-career home run. It was a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning off Minnesota Twins outfielder Jordan Luplow.
August 12, 1908: At North 11th Street Grounds, Reading splits a double-header with Lancaster, winning the first game 3-2 in 10 innings and being no-hit in a 2-0 game two defeat. Rube Covelski walks two and strikes out five in tossing the no-hitter. Lancaster’s runs are scored in the 9th inning when Frank Baker loses a ground ball in the sun with a pair of men on and two outs.
August 12, 1929: At Lauer’s Park, George Quellich’s amazing string of hits ends at 15 as he goes 2-for-3 in the Keys’ 11-8 win over Montreal. The final blow is a grand slam in the fourth inning. His streak of 15 consecutive hits is a record for organized baseball that still stands. Teammate Rabbit Whitman is retired in the sixth inning when his line drive deflects off the pitcher’s chest and caroms to the third baseman, who throws him out – ending Whitman’s string of seven consecutive hits.
August 12, 1983: R-Phils pitcher Richard Gaynor throws a no-hitter against the Nashua Angels
in game two of a double-header as the R-Phils win 6-0.
August 12, 2001: At Reading, Brett Myers takes a no-hitter into the 8th inning against the Erie
SeaWolves, losing his bid on an Eric Munson single. Elio Serrano would close out the ninth as
he and Myers combine for a one-hit, 8-0 victory against the top offense in the league.
August 12, 2003: At Reading, the Phils explode for 10 runs in the 7th inning to erase a 3-1 deficit
and rally for a 13-3 victory over Portland. Uriel Casillas hits his first home run of the year, a grand
slam, to highlight the barrage. The Phillies’ big inning features only three hits.
August 12, 2006: At Reading, John Castellano singles home Peter Bergeron with two outs in the bottom of the 10th to lift the R-Phils to a 4-3 win over Harrisburg.
August 12, 2015: At Reading, the Fightin Phils win their 9th straight, an 8-4 decision over Harrisburg. J.P. Crawford is 2-for-3 with a home run, RBI, 2 runs, a stolen base and a walk while Art Charles hits his second pinch-hit HR of the season in the 8th. Rene Garcia goes 2-for-4 with an RBI filling in for the red-hot Andrew Knapp.
August 12, 2017: At Richmond, Drew Anderson picks up his 9th and final win in a Reading uniform in game 1 of a doubleheader (6.0 IP, 2 H, 5 BB, ER, 5 K). Reading sweeps the twin bill, 8-1 and 4-2.
August 13, 1908: At North 11th Street Grounds, Jack Lelivelt is hit by a pitch, then steals all three bases in the 8th inning as the Pretzels rout Lancaster, 10-4. With the Pretzels already up by five runs, Lelivelt’s feat is no doubt intended to impress Connie Mack, who is scouting from the stands. Lelivelt singles, doubles, steals four bases and scores four runs while Frank Baker has three hits, including a double, and scores three times.
August 13, 1935: James “Mudcat” Grant, a member of 1956 Reading Indians and future Reading Baseball Hall of Famer, is born in Lacoochee, Florida. Grant would win 145 games in a 14-year major league career. In 1965, he was 21-7 and went 2-1 in the World Series for Minnesota.
August 13, 1949: Class of 1990 Reading Baseball Hall of Famer and 1971 Reading Phillie Andre Thornton is born in Tuskegee, Alabama. Thornton played 14 years in the Majors for the Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs and Montreal Expos, hitting 253 career home runs.
August 13, 1967: At Reading, 21-year old Larry Bowa makes his Baseballtown debut by going 1-for-2 with an RBI single but commits a costly error as the R-Phils fall to Waterbury, 7-5. Bowa’s mishandling of Bobby Bonds’ potential double-play grounder in the 5th leads to a decisive 6-run rally for the Giants.
August 13, 1973: At Reading, the Phillies sweep a doubleheader from first place Sherbrooke, 4-3 and 4-2, to move out of last place and climb within 3.0 games of the National Division leaders.
August 13, 1995: At Binghamton, David Doster goes 4-for-5 with a double, HR and 4 RBI to lead Reading past the Mets.

August 13, 2013: At Reading, Anthony Hewitt’s infield single scores the tying run and a wild pitch brings Sebastian Valle home with the winning run as the Fightin Phils rally for 2 in the 9th to overcome Binghamton, 7-6.
August 13, 2015: At Reading, the Fightin Phils record their 10th straight win and complete their 3rd straight series sweep with a 3-0 blanking of Harrisburg. Nick Pivetta (5.2 IP, 3 H, BB, 8 K) gets his first win since coming over in a trade from Washington. Andrew Knapp is 2-for-3 with a solo HR and a walk. It is his 4th straight multi-hit game, his 11th straight game with a hit, his 10th straight game with an RBI and his 5th straight game with a run. His batting average after 36 games in Reading stands at .411.
August 13, 2023: At New Hampshire, Reading Manager Al Pedrique earns his 1,000th career win with an 8-3 victory over the Fisher Cats. Pedrique is in his first season with the Fightin Phils and the win total includes his time as both a Minor League and Major League Manager.
August 13, 2024: At Reading, the Fightin Phils surrender a 5-1 lead, but score two in the bottom of the eighth to beat New Hampshire 7-5 to open a six-game series at home. Justin Crawford had two hits, a run, double and two RBI. Gabriel Rincones Jr. homers 410 feet onto route 61 beyond the right field fence. Noah Skirrow went five-strong innings and Daniel Harper earned the win, pitching the final 1.2 innings in relief.
August 14, 1930: The first night game in Reading is played in front of 3,000 fans at Lauer’s Park. Montreal wins the slugfest, 13-10, out-hitting the Keys 18 to 17. Reading shortstop Bill Jurges is injured and later removed when he fails to see a throw from the outfield and it hits him in the right arm. Groundskeepers whitewash home after Keys pitcher George Bell complains about not being able to see the plate in the early innings.
August 14, 1940: At Lauer’s Park in Reading, the Chicks thump Lancaster, 18-2, thanks to 17 hits and six Red Rose errors. Right fielder Bob Hamilton is the star, reaching base safely in all six trips to the plate. Hamilton goes 5-for-5 with a home run, five RBI and four runs scored. He is also hit by a pitch.
August 14, 1967: At Reading, the R-Phils rally for four runs in the 8th to beat Waterbury, 5-1. Larry Bowa, in his second game with Reading, atones for an error the night before by making several fine defensive plays and delivering a big 2-run insurance single.
August 14, 1973: At Reading, a second consecutive doubleheader sweep of the Sherbrooke Pirates moves the R-Phils to within a game of first place in the National Division. The Phillies take the opener, 4-3, and the nightcap, 6-2.
August 14, 1996: At Reading, Dan Held hits his 24th HR of the season and drives in four as the Phils beat Norwich, 9-7.
August 14, 1998: At Reading, Anthony Shumaker throws a one-hit, complete game shutout of Binghamton. A 6th inning single by Dennis Colon provides the Mets’ lone base runner. All nine R-Phils starters have at least one hit, with Shumaker contributing a double and scoring a run.
August 14, 2003: At Reading, the Phillies draw more than 9,000 fans for the third game in a row. It’s the first time in franchise history the stadium has held 9,000 or more on three consecutive days. Despite the sell-out crowd, the Phils fall to Portland, 11-6.
August 14, 2004: At Reading, Shane Bowers (2 IP), Eude Brito (5 IP), Felix Villegas (1 IP) and Martire Franco (1 IP) combine to shut out Altoona, 3-0. Carlos Ruiz has two hits, including a solo HR.
August 14, 2005: At Reading, Carlos Leon’s long single down the right field line scores Trent Pratt with the game-winning run in the 11th inning as the Phillies top Altoona, 6-5. In the 6th inning, Michael Bourn had tallied Reading’s fifth run when he tug up and scored from second base on Leon’s sacrifice fly near the wall in center.
August 14, 2007: At Reading, the Phils squander a 6-0 lead against Erie but rally for two runs in the bottom of the 6th to beat the SeaWolves, 8-6. Reliever Julio De La Cruz gives Erie their tying runs in the top of the 6th by committing three errors. Mike Costanzo goes 3-for-5 with a double, three RBI and a run scored for Reading.
August 14, 2011: At Altoona, the R-Phils end a 6-game slide and get back to .500 with a 5-4 win over the Curve in 12 innings. Fidel Hernandez scores the winning run with two outs when Chris Lubanski strikes out but reaches first on a throwing error by catcher Tony Sanchez.
August 14, 2012: At Reading, Darin Ruf hits his 5th home run in 4 days and Cody Asche has his second straight 3-hit game as the R-Phils beat Trenton, 7-2. Both players finish 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
August 14, 2016: At Altoona, Dylan Cozens hits his 33rd homer in a 6-5 win for the Fightin Phils.
August 14, 2024: At Reading, the Fightin Phils win 5-4 as local-product Braeden Fausnaught makes his Double-A debut. He went five innings and allowed one run on five hits, with no walks and five strikeouts. Fausnaught had tons of family and friends on hand for his debut on Wednesday. He played his high school baseball at Danville High School, which is 71 miles away from FirstEnergy Stadium. Fausnaught then played collegiately at West Chester University, which is just 45 miles from Baseballtown.
August 15, 1919: At Lauer’s Park in Reading, the Marines sweep a double-header from Toronto, 5-1 and 3-2. In the second game, Toronto’s Carl Hubbell takes a perfect game into the bottom of the 7th and final inning, only to see Reading storm back to tie the game at 2-2. Joe Burns singles home Gene Sheridan with two outs in the 8th for the game-winner.
August 15, 1930: In the second night game at Lauer’s Park, Reading’s Lon Warneke tosses a rain-shortened no-hitter, allowing only a 3rd inning walk through seven frames. The 21-year old hurler known as the Arkansas Hummingbird also strikes out nine. A thunderstorm halts the game in the 7th with the Keys ahead of Buffalo, 1-0.
August 15, 1973: At Reading, Jim Essian’s 2-out single in the 9th inning brings in Rusty Klobas with the game-winning run as the Phillies beat Sherbrooke, 2-1, for the 5th time in 3 days and take over first place from the Pirates. Chuck Kniffin goes the distance in winning his 8th game for Reading, whose .518 winning percentage was a point better than Sherbrooke.
August 15, 1997: At Norwich, the Navigators score seven in the 4th to beat the Phils, 12-2.
August 15, 2009: At Reading, pinch-hitter Tim Kennelly’s 2-out, 2-run single down the left field line scores Steve Susdorf and Brad Harman to give the R-Phils a 4-3, walk-off win over Binghamton in game 1 of a double-header.
August 15, 2012: At Reading, the Phillies fall to Trenton, 6-5, but Darin Ruf homers for the 5th consecutive game and the 11th time in August, giving him 29 long balls for the season.
August 15, 2017: At Reading, Jiandido Tromp’s single with the bases loaded and 2 outs in 15th inning downs Bowie, 4-3. Reading scored 3 in the 1st inning, then didn’t score for 13 straight frames before posting the game-winning tally.

August 15, 2023: At Reading, the R-Phils beat Somerset 6-5 in a game that was completed after being suspended on July 9. Reading, playing as the road team, scored two runs in the tenth to give Tristan Garnett his first Double-A victory in relief. Reading would fall 4-3 to Somerset in the originally-scheduled contest.
August 16, 1955: At Reading, shortstop Larry Raines snags a line drive near second base, steps on the bag and throws to Joe Randazzo at first to complete a triple play in the top of the 1st inning. Gene Lary goes the distance on a 3-hitter and Roger Maris contributes three hits, including an RBI double in the 5-1 win over Johnstown.
August 16, 1973: At Reading, the Phillies complete a 6-game sweep of Sherbrooke with a 5-2 win, turning a 5-game deficit into a 1-game lead in the Eastern League’s National Division in just 4 days. The Pirates had won 10 of the 14 meetings between the teams prior to that series.
August 16, 1995: At Reading, Scott Rolen makes his Double-A debut, hitting a home run in an 8-5 win over New Britain.

August 16, 2006: At Akron, Gary Burnham ties Dan Held for the franchise record of 53 career home runs with a solo blast to right in the 3rd inning. Burnham also singles twice and scores a pair in the Phillies’ 6-1 victory.
August 16, 2007: At Reading, Gary Knotts takes a no-hitter into the 7th inning before Erie’s Jeff Larish breaks it up with a 2-out single to right. Knotts finishes with a 1-hit shutout and strikes out eight en route to the 7-0 win. All seven of Reading’s runs come in the first four innings.
August 16, 2009: At Reading, the R-Phils score the game’s only run on a 9th inning throwing error by Binghamton 2nd baseman Jose Coronado. With runners at 1st and 2nd and one out, Kevin Mahar’s grounder is stopped by a sliding Coronado, who then throws the ball well over the 1st baseman’s head, allowing Domonic Brown to score the winning run.
August 16, 2015: At Trenton, Ethan Martin (5.0 IP, 2 H, BB, 3 K) and 3 relievers combine on 4-hit shutout of the Thunder. Stephen Shackleford notches his 28th save as he continues to add to his single season franchise record. Both Phils runs score in the 3rd inning.
August 16, 2024: At Reading, Erick Brito hits a three-run double in the eighth inning to break a 6-6 tie and lead the Fightin Phils to a 10-6 win over New Hampshire. Marcus Lee Sang also homered and Andrew Walling struck out five over two-scoreless innings on relief.
August 17, 1953 – At Reading, Norm Camp tosses a one-hitter against Scranton, losing his no-hitter when Mike Gipp singles with one out in the 9th inning. Camp does not walk a batter and faces one hitter over the minimum for the game. Earl Averill, Jr. hits two home runs and knocks in five as the Indians cruise, 12-0.
August 17, 1955: At Williamsport, the Indians sweep a pair from the Grays, 4-2 and 8-6 in 10 innings. In the second game, Dick Brown’s two-out, two-run home run is the difference. Roger Maris goes 3-for-7 with a homer, four RBIs and a stolen base on the day.
August 17, 1989: At London, Mickey Morandini goes 2-for-4 with a home run, six RBIs and two runs scored as Reading pounds the Tigers, 14-5.
August 17, 1990: At Reading, the R-Phils break their single season attendance record for the third straight year, surpassing 180,230 fans in a 4-1 loss to New Britain. Future Baseball Hall of Famer Jeff Bagwell goes 2-for-2 with an RBI and run for the Red Sox.

August 17, 2014: At Reading, Hoby Milner tosses a 99-pitch, 3-hit shutout in 1:58 as Reading tops Binghamton, 1-0, avoiding a season sweep by the B-Mets. Milner strikes out 5 and does not allow a walk. Jake Fox’s RBI single in the 4th is the game’s only run.
August 17, 2015: At Reading, the Fightin Phils beat New Hampshire, 8-1. Andrew Knapp, who gets a hit in his 15th straight game, is 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and 2 runs scored.
August 17, 2016: At Reading, Dylan Cozens homers for the 3rd straight game to pull even with Rhys Hoskins with 35 HRs atop the Minor League leaderboard, but its Reading’s only run for the second straight game. They fall, 2-1 to Richmond, losing back-to-back home games for the first time that season.
August 17, 2023: At Reading, former Patriots Oliver Dunn and Max McDowell each homer late to give Reading a 5-4 win over Somerset. It was the third-straight game Dunn hit a homer and his 20th of the season. Carlos De La Cruz also hit his 21st home run of the season and David Parkinson went 5.1 innings without allowing an earned run.
August 17, 2024: At Reading, the Fightin Phils top New Hampshire 8-1. Gabriel Rincones Jr., Otto Kemp and Trevor Schwecke go back-to-back-to-back for three-straight home runs. It was the first time Reading hit three-straight home runs sine June 7, 2016, at Akron, done by Alfaro, Cozens, and Hoskins. Moises Chace also earned the win in his Double-A debut, striking out six and allowing one run over five innings.
August 18, 1908: At North 11th Street Grounds, Reading spit-baller Jack Emerson wins his 20th game, a 2-hit shutout over Johnstown in game one of a double-header split. After the umpire Gochnauer falls ill in the 7th inning, the remainder of the 4-0 victory is officiated alternately by Pat Murphy of the visitors and Reading’s Johnny Barthold.
August 18, 1990: At Reading, the R-Phils fight their way past New Britain, 8-6, in a game marred by a bench-clearing brawl in the 4th inning. Four players are ejected from each team, including Reading’s Kim Batiste, who was 2-for-3 with a homer and triple before his dismissal. Batiste was taken to the Reading Hospital later and needed 2 stitches in his right hand that was stepped on in the melee. Reading’s Kennedy Infante endured a few chipped teeth, as well.
August 18, 2001: At Erie, Mickey Lopez hits a 2-run home run in the 9th inning to lift Reading to a 9-8 victory in a see-saw battle with the SeaWolves. Lopez also collects a single and scores three runs.
August 18, 2010: At Reading, the R-Phils beat Akron, 3-2, scoring the winning run on a sloppy fielding play in the bottom of the 9th. With John Suomi on first and one out, Harold Garcia’s grounder bounces off 1st baseman Beau Mills’ glove. Suomi continues to third as Jason Kipnis struggles to pick the ball up, then scores when Kipnis’ throw to third is wild.
August 18, 2012: At Akron, Ethan Martin wins his 4th straight start since joining the R-Phils, lowering his ERA to 1.48 in a 1-0 victory. Martin goes 7.0 innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 walks while fanning 7. Justin Friend closes the game for his 19th save, extending his scoreless innings streak to 25.1 innings.
August 18, 2015: At Reading, the Fightin Phils rally from 5-2 deficit for their 4th straight win, a 6-5 decision over New Hampshire. Andrew Knapp homers, doubles, drives in 2 and scores 2 as he extends his hitting streak to 16 consecutive games.
August 18, 2023: At Reading, Somerset toppled the Fightin Phils 22-3. It marks the most hits and runs that Reading gave up in 2023, along with the largest margin of defeat. Jasson Dominguez and Max Burt each had four hits for the Patriots, while Eduardo Torrealba drove in seven runs. Both catcher Herbert Iser and 1B/OF Jhailyn Ortiz pitched the top of the ninth for Reading.
August 18, 2024: At Reading, the Fightin Phils finish the week with five wins against New Hampshire with a 4-2 triumph over the Fisher Cats. Eiberson Castellano strikes out 10 hitters over six innings, while allowing two-earned runs. Otto Kemp doubles twice, while Trevor Schwecke, Marcus Lee Sang and Cade Fergus all record two hits. Nelson L. Alvarez strikes out four over two-scoreless innings in relief, and Tommy McCollum picks up his ninth save with a scoreless ninth inning.
August 19, 1911: At Lauer’s Park in Reading, the Pretzels split an exciting double-header with Johnstown, winning the first game, 1-0, in 14 innings and falling, 2-1, in the second. Buck Ramsey goes all 14 innings in the opener, giving up just six hits for the win. In game two, Johnstown’s right fielder makes a sensational grab to save the game for the Johnnies in the final inning, batting down what looks like a game-winning home run with his glove and catching the ball with his bare hand.
August 19, 1990: At Reading, Andy Ashby goes 7.0 shutout innings to pick up his 4th straight win and reach 22 consecutive innings without allowing a run as the R-Phils beat New Britain, 2-1. The Eastern League’s top hitter, Jeff Bagwell, is held hitless in 4 at-bats for the Red Sox.
August 19, 1996: At Bowie, Essex “Gas” Burton collects four hits, but Reading falls to the Baysox, 9-8, on Melvin Rosario’s 2-run homer in the 13th inning.
August 19, 1999: At Reading, Reggie Taylor and Aaron Royster both hit two home runs, but it’s a Rusty McNamara bases loaded walk in the 10th that ultimately gives the Phillies a 7-6 win over Binghamton.

August 19, 2004: At Erie, Juan Richardson hits two home runs and drives in four in his first game back from a rehab assignment as the Phillies top Erie, 8-2. Jim Deschaine homers and drives in the other four Reading runs.
August 19, 2006: At Reading, in the first game of a double-header against New Britain, Gary Burnham homers with a man on in the bottom of the 1st to become the all-time franchise leader in home runs with 54. The homer sparks the Phils to a 5-2 win. Despite another Burnham home run in the second game, the Rock Cats earn the twin bill split with an 8-4 decision in game two.
August 19, 2009: At Portland, the Phillies explode for season-highs of 20 hits and 18 runs in an 18-1 thrashing of the Sea Dogs. The victory is a remarkably balanced effort, as all nine R-Phils starters have at least one hit, eight of them have a multi-hit game, nine players score and eight drive in a run. Kevin Mahar has the biggest day, going 3-for-5 with a home run, 4 RBI and 3 runs scored.
August 19, 2013: At Altoona, Jim Murphy goes 4-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored as Reading snaps a 5-game losing streak by beating the Curve, 4-2, in game 1 of a doubleheader…also August 19, Ryne Sandberg becomes the 4th Reading Phillies alumnus to be named manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, taking over for the fired Charlie Manuel.
August 19, 2015: At Reading, the Fightin Phils win for the 5th time in a row and 15th time in 16 games as they pummel New Hampshire, 12-6. Five Reading players (Destin Hood, Nick Williams, Angelo Mora, J.P. Crawford and Rene Garcia) have 3-hit games, and Hood goes 3-for-5 with 2 home runs, a double, 6 RBI and 3 runs scored. The first 5 players in the Fightin Phils lineup score all 12 of the team’s runs.
August 19, 2016: At Erie, in the completion of game suspended from July 31, Dylan Cozens homers twice and drives in 3, equaling Ryan Howard for second on the all-time list with 37 home runs as Reading wins, 9-1. The Fightin Phils complete the sweep with a 10-6 win in game 2. Cozens has another historic effort in that one, going 3-for-4 with a double, 3 RBIs, a run, and a stolen base. The run is his 100th, making him the first player in franchise history to drive in and score 100 runs in the same season. The steal is his 20th, making him the first Reading player since Marlon Byrd in 2001 to have 20 homers and 20 SBs in the same season. Jorge Alfaro also has a solid second game, going 2-for-4 with a HR, double, 4 RBIs and 2 runs.
August 19, 2023: At Reading, the Fightin Phils beat Somerset 8-7. Oliver Dunn homers again, marking his fourth home run in five games on the week. Ethan Wilson doubles twice, Baron Radcliff homered and Nick Ward had a game-winning two-run single in the seventh. Orion Kerkering pitched around a two-run home run in the ninth to pick up his second Double-A save and second save of the week.

August 21, 1953 – At Elmira, Reading takes both ends of a double-header against the Pioneers. Billy Joe Davidson throws a 7-inning, four-hit shutout in a 7-0 game one win. The Indians rally for six in the top of the 9th to win the second game, 8-5. Billy Harrell’s three-run triple was the key blow and put Reading ahead, 7-5.
August 21, 1983: At Glens Falls, seven home runs fuel a 19-2 Phillies blowout of Glens Falls, giving the R-Phils their 9th straight win. Carrrasco fans eight and walks two Curve batters. Joey Hammond’s RBI groundout to 3rd base scores Jason Hill with the game’s only run in the 2nd inning.
August 21, 2012: At Harrisburg, Reading wins a wild contest with the Senators, 11-9, once again pulling even with New Britain in the battle for second place. The Phillies rally for 3 in the 9th, tying the game on Darin Ruf’s solo homer and taking the lead on Miguel Abreu’s 2-run single. Justin Friend remains perfect with his 20th save in as many opportunities and shrinks his ERA to 0.26.
August 21, 2013: At Altoona, the Fightin Phils toss their 4th shutout of the season and second in as many days by whitewashing the Curve, 8-0. Bobby Bramhall goes 6.0 innings for the win while Maikel Franco is 3-for-4 with a double, homer, walk, 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored.
August 21, 2017: At Bowie, the Fightin Phils win, 5-0, as Franklyn Kilome earns his first Double-A win. Kilome lasts 8.0 innings, giving up only 3 hits and 4 walks while striking out 5. A 4-run 4th is the key inning. Damek Tomscha goes 1-for-4 to extend his hit streak to 15 straight games.
August 21, 2023: In Philadelphia, Bryce Harper hits an inside-the-park home run that is misplayed by Giants centerfielder Wade Meckler. Ironically, Meckler his an inside-the-park home run at Reading on July 1, 2023 when with Richmond.

August 22, 1956: At Reading, Bobby Locke hurls a 5-hitter to defeat Binghamton, 5-0, in the second game of a double-header sweep. It touches off a streak of five consecutive shutouts by Indians pitchers.
August 21-24, 1956: The Reading Indians win six games, five via shutout, in four days to take sole possession of first place. The 6-0 spree (which also includes a 16-inning stalemate) lifts Reading past Binghamton, whom they had trailed by 5 games, and Schenectady, whom they had trailed by 4.5 games.

August 22, 2000: At Harrisburg, Noah Hall’s 15th inning RBI single lifts the Senators by Reading, 5-4.
August 22, 2008: At Trenton, Andrew Carpenter wins for the fourth time in five starts since returning from Single-A Clearwater. He surrenders only two hits and one unearned run while fanning eight over 7.0 innings in Reading’s 2-1 win over the Thunder. Carpenter was the only Phillies pitcher to win a game from July 29 through August 24.
August 22, 2014: At Reading, the Fightin Phils improve to 10-2 in extra-inning games by beating Erie, 4-3, in 12. Raywilly Gomez hits a 2-run homer, his only HR of the season, to tie the game in the 9th before Peter Lavin’s RBI single wins it in the 12th.
August 22, 2015: At Reading, FirstEnergy Stadium is packed with a franchise-record 9,970 fans to see one the club’s Mega Blast fireworks shows on a Saturday night. The crowd tops the previous record of 9,967 set on July 24 the previous season. As for the game, New Britain wins it, 8-2, with all 10 runs being scored in the final 2 innings. Only Brock Stassi’s 2-out, 2-run homer in the bottom of the 9th prevents the Fightin Phils from being shut out.
August 22, 2017: At Bowie, Kyle Martin goes 2-for-5 with 2 HRs, 3 RBIs and 3 runs in Reading’s 12-9, 10-inning win. Christian Marrero, Zach Coppola and Jiandido Tromp all have 3 hits.
August 23, 1958: Julio Franco, Reading Baseball Hall of Famer and 1981 Reading Phillie, is born in Hato Mayor, Dominican Republic. Franco has been in the Major Leagues since 1982.
August 23, 1983: At Reading, the Phillies clinch the Eastern League regular season title with a 5-
0 shutout of New Britain. Jeff Stone steals 3 more bases, giving him 11 over the span of 4 days
and 82 for the year. Willie Darkis homers and drives in 3.
August 23, 1997: At Harrisburg, the Senators score a run in the bottom of the 9th to beat the Phillies, 3-2, giving Reading its 10th straight loss.
August 23, 2001: At Reading, Brett Myers throws seven innings of 3-hit ball and combines with
Elio Serrano and Jeremy Wedel for the 7-0 shutout of the Harrisburg Senators. Myers also went
2-for-3 with a triple, a run and an RBI.
August 23, 2003: At Reading, the Phillies set a modern franchise record for single-game
attendance by drawing 9,803 fans for a Saturday night game against New Britain. The Phillies
whip the Rock Cats, 7-2, as Keith Bucktrot picks up his first win at FirstEnergy Stadium and Jim
Deschaine and Nate Espy both homer.
August 23, 2004: At Reading, Carlos Ruiz hits his second solo home run of the game in the
bottom of the 9th to lift the Phillies past New Britain, 7-6, in a stand alone make-up game. New
Britain had rallied from a 5-0 hole to take the lead, 6-5 in the 8th.
August 23, 2012: At Reading, Darin Ruf’s grand slam turns a 4-3 deficit into a 7-4 lead in the 7th inning as the Phillies rally for a 7-6 win over Erie. The homer is his 33rd, tying him with Greg Luzinski for 3rd on the franchise single-season HR list. With the victory, Reading takes over sole possession of second place in the Eastern Division, a spot they would not relinquish the remainder of the season.
August 23, 2015: At Reading, the New Britain Rock Cats play in Baseballtown for the final time, beating the Fightin Phils, 7-5, to sweep the 3-game series. After the season, New Britain would move to Hartford to become the Yard Goats, ending the city’s 32-year run in the Eastern League.
August 23, 2018: At Reading, Austin Listi goes 2-for-3 with a homer, double, 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored as the Fightin Phils top Trenton, 8-3.
August 23, 2023: At Harrisburg, Mick Abel is strong as the Fightin Phils beat the Senators 6-1. The Phillies No. 2 Prospect goes a career-long seven innings, while allowing just two hits and one tun, while striking out three. Oliver Dunn had two hits and Jhalyn Ortiz drove in four runs with a pair of doubles.
August 24, 1940: At York, the Reading Chicks pound 54-year old Lefty George for 15 hits in a 9-
5 win. 18-year old Carl Furillo goes 3-for-5 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored for
Reading.
August 24, 1955: At Reading, a stadium record crowd of 6,460 packs the park on Big Fellow-Little Fellow Night to see the Indians down Schenectady, 4-2. Roger Maris’ 18th home run of the season, a two-run shot in the sixth, clears the brick wall and gives the Tribe the lead for good.
August 24, 1956: At Reading, Wally Seward and Charley Kolakowski toss back-to-back shutouts
in a double-header sweep of Syracuse, extending Reading’s streak of not being scored upon to
36 straight innings. Seward throws a seven inning one-hitter in the opener and Kolakowski
strikes out 11 in the afterpiece.
August 24, 1983: At Reading, Roger Clemens strikes out 15 over 8.0 shutout innings as New
Britain beats the R-Phils, 11-3. Clemens improves to 3-1 and lowers his ERA in Double-A to
1.60. Reading scores all 3 of its runs in the 9th inning off reliever Chuck Dale….also,
Baseballtown legend Juan Samuel makes his Major League debut. Samuel only played 47
games for Reading in ’83 as he rapidly advanced through the system. In those 47 games, he hit
11 homers, knocked in 39 runs and stole 19 bases.
August 24, 1999: At Reading, Larry Huff has four hits and four runs scored to lead the Phils over
Bowie, 14-2.
August 24, 2003: At Reading, New Britain’s Horacio Estrada no-hits the R-Phils on the last home
date of the 2003 season. It is the first no-hitter tossed against Reading since May 22, 1991. Uriel
Casillas is summoned from right field to pitch in the 9th inning for Reading and retires both batters
he faces. New Britain wins it, 10-0.
August 24, 2006: At Connecticut, Brandon Gemoll’s RBI single plates Joey Hammond with the winning run as the R-Phils win their longest game of the season, 8-7 in 16 innings. The Defenders had rallied to tie the game 7-7 with three runs in the 9th.
August 24, 2007: At Reading, 9,385 fans pack FirstEnergy Stadium to get a glimpse of Chase Utley as he makes his first appearance in a Reading Phillies uniform. Utley, rehabbing a broken wrist, goes 1-for-6 in the double-header split against Akron.
August 24, 2011: At New Britain, Reading wins, 4-2, to capture a pivotal 3-game series and retain a two game lead over the Rock Cats in the wildcard chase. Mike Cisco goes 3.1 hitless innings to improve to 8-0 on the season and lowers his ERA to 1.63.
August 24, 2012: At Reading, Darin Ruf ties Hal Jones for 2nd on the franchise single-season home run list with his 34th round-tripper as the R-Phils top Erie, 6-2.
August 24, 2013: At Reading, the FirstEnergy Stadium hosts its first day-night doubleheader in 10 years, splitting a twin bill with New Hampshire. The Phils take the afternoon tilt, 4-2, as Maikel Franco homers and former R-Phil Tyson Brummett gets tagged with a complete game loss. The Fisher Cats score twice in the 10th to win the second game, 3-2.
August 24, 2015: At Altoona, Andrew Knapp continues his torrid August hitting with a home run and 5 RBI in Reading’s 11-5 win over the Curve. Nick Williams is 4-for-6 with a homer, double, 4 runs and an RBI. J.P. Crawford contributes to the 17-hit effort by going 3-for-5 with a triple, 2 RBI and 2 runs.
August 24, 2017: At Reading, Damek Tomscha’s 3-run homer in the 1st inning lifts the Fightin Phils to a 4-2 win over Harrisburg. Also in the 1st, Zach Coppola steals his 17th straight base without being caught (a streak started July 17), but is later picked off by Tim Collins in the 8th to end the streak.
August 24, 2018: At Reading, Malquin Canelo does not register an official at-bat, yet scores the game-tying run in the 8th and drives in the game-winning run in the 10th as the Fightin Phils rally to beat Portland, 5-4. Canelo enters the game in the 8th as a pinch runner, scoring on Austin Listi’s 2-run single. He then walks with the bases loaded in the 10th to force Drew Stankiewicz in with the winning run.
August 24, 2023: At Harrisburg, Zach Haake earns his first win for Reading by throwing five-strong frames. Reading’s offense comes from home runs from Ethan Wilson and Jhailyn Ortiz in a 3-2 win. Tommy McCollum earned his first Double-A save in the win.
August 24, 2024: At Binghamton, Moises Chace strikes out a career-high 10 batters over 4.2 innings in just his second Double-A start.
August 25, 1956: At Reading, Indians pitchers see their string of 49 consecutive shutout innings come to end in the second game of a twin bill with Syracuse. Vic Lapiner throws Reading’s fifth straight shutout in the first game and Gary Bell adds six more goose eggs in the nightcap before the Chiefs finally push two runs across in the 7th. The Indians lose the second game, 2-0, and come within four outs of being no-hit by Tom Van Remmen.
August 25, 1992: At Harrisburg, Eric Hill tosses a 4-hitter and Ed Rosado has 3 hits and 4 RBI in Reading’s 11-2 win over the Senators.

August 25, 2000: At Reading, Brandon Duckworth picks up his 12th win, a 4-1 decision over Altoona, as the Phillies clinch the EL Southern Division title.
August 25, 2008: At Reading, Joe Bisenius pitches 2.0 scoreless innings of relief to become the first R-Phils pitcher other than Andrew Carpenter to win a game since July 28. Rallying from a 4-0 deficit to beat Connecticut 7-4, Reading wins for just the fifth time in 27 games.
August 25, 2009: At Reading, the R-Phils rally for five runs in the bottom of the 8th to overcome a 5-3 deficit and beat Erie, 8-5, in a pivotal Southern Division matchup. Quintin Berry’s 2-run single ties the game and Michael Spidale’s infield single gives Reading its first lead. The Phils had trailed 4-0 after three innings.
August 25, 2013: At Reading, Roy Halladay is slated to make a rehab appearance in Baseballtown but is forced to return to Philadelphia early in the morning due to the big Phils’ 18-inning loss the night before. 8,916 fans, more than 2,000 of whom bought tickets to see Halladay, get to watch the Fightin Phils lose to New Hampshire, 7-3, while Halladay beats Arizona, 9-5.
August 25, 2023: At Harrisburg, the Fightin Phils rally late for a 2-1 win over the Senators. Harrisburg starter Mitchell Parker was excellent, pitching eight-shutout innings. But Parker came back out for the ninth, and on the first pitch he threw Baron Radcliff hit a game-tying home run. Reading then took a 2-1 lead when Cody Roberts hit a go-ahead single in the 11th. Matt Osterberg started and went 5.1 innings while matching a career-high with eight strikeouts. The bullpen combined to throw 5.2-shutout innings, allowing just one hit and striking out eight.
August 25, 2024: At Binghamton, Eiberson Castellano strikes out 11 hitters. It marks the second-straight start that Castellano strikes out 10+ batters, as he struck out 10 in his prior start against New Hampshire. It’s also the second-straight day that a R-Phils’ starting pitcher struck out double-digit batter, as Moises Chace struck out 10 t he night prior.
August 26, 1955: Future Reading Baseball Hall of Famer and Cleveland Indian first baseman Vic Wertz is hospitalized with a non-paralytic form of polio, forcing him to miss the remainder of the ’55 campaign.
August 26, 1990: At New Britain, Mike Fitzgerald hits a 2-run homer in the top of the 13th inning to lift the R-Phils over the Red Sox, 3-1. Andy Ashby tosses 7.0 shutout innings, allowing 3 hits and 4 walks to extend his scoreless streak to 29 straight innings, but it’s Toby Borland who gets the win by throwing the final 2 innings.
August 26, 1995: At Harrisburg, Bobby Estalella rips a home run in his Double-A debut and Ron Blazier gives up an unearned run in 6.2 innings of relief as Reading beat the Senators, 6-2.
August 26, 1996: At Reading, Dan Held hits his 26th home run of the season, but Bowie triumphs, 7-5.
August 26, 2007: At Reading, Mike Costanzo (2-for-4, 2 R, 3 RBI) launches a 3-run home run off the Betty’s Salads sign above the pool pavilion in right field and Carlos Carrasco gives up just one run on six hits in 7.0 innings as the R-Phils bomb playoff-bound Akron, 11-1, in the season’s final home game.
August 26, 2009: At Reading, Neil Sellers becomes the first Reading Phillie to hit 30 doubles in consecutive seasons as the Phils beat Erie, 6-4. Sellers also homers, scores twice and drives in a pair. He would finish the season with 33 two-baggers.
August 26, 2010: At Reading, Mike Cisco tosses a 1-hit shutout, striking out 10 as the Phillies top Binghamton, 5-0. Cisco gives up a double and a walk in the 1st inning, then retires the final 25 B-Mets en route to his 4th win of the season.
August 26, 2013: At Reading, the Phils storm back from an early 6-1 deficit to beat Richmond, 7-6, in 10 innings. Maikel Franco, celebrating his 21st birthday, sends the game into extras with a 2-out, 2-run homer in the 9th. Kelly Dugan homers on the first pitch of the bottom of the 10th to end it.
August 26, 2015. At Altoona, Stephen Shackleford allows a 4-run lead to slip away in the 9th inning, but the Fightin Phils rebound with 2 in the 10th to beat the Curve, 8-6. Both Reading runs in the 10th score without a ball being hit out of the infield as 3 walks (2 with the bases loaded), an error and a bunt single produce the tallies. Destin Hood, whose walk starts the winning rally, is 2-for-4 with a homer, triple and 5 RBI while KC Serna goes 4-for-5 with 2 doubles, an RBI and 2 runs.
August 27, 1908: At Altoona, Herbert “Blondy” Jackson, pitching his first game for Reading, tosses a one-hit shutout and faces the minimum 27 batters in the Pretzels’ 7-0 win. Frank Baker drives in four with an RBI-single and a three-run homer.
August 27, 1917: At Circus Maximus, Reading hands Scranton its 22nd consecutive loss by rallying from a late 9-0 deficit. The Pretzels get five runs back in the 7th, then plate 10 more in the 8th to pull out the 15-9 victory. The Pretzels tally 22 hits on the day, with manager/first baseman George Wiltse and right fielder Barry each collecting four.
August 27, 1988: At Reading, Warren Magee tosses a complete game shutout, blanking Vermont on 6 hits as the Phillies prevail, 4-0. The closest the Mariners come to scoring is in the 4th inning when Ken Griffey, Jr. is thrown out at the plate by left fielder Steve DeAngelis.
August 27, 1989: At Reading, Mickey Morandini hits a pair of home runs and drives in four as the Phillies top London, 7-2.
August 27, 1994: At Reading, the Phillies fall to Bowie as the Baysox score six runs in the 13th.
August 27, 1996: At Reading, Wayne Gomes ties a team record with his 24th save in a 6-4 victory over New Haven.
August 27, 1998: At Reading, Evan Thomas throws his third shutout of the season as the Phils beat New Britain, 4-0. Thomas allows seven hits and a walk a strikes out ten.
August 27, 2000: At Reading, the Phillies and Altoona play 16 innings on the heels of a 12-inning affair the night before. The Curve prevail in both contests, 4-1 and 4-2.
August 27, 2001: At Harrisburg, Rheal Cormier, making a rehab start, starts a game for the R-Phils and combines with Brad Baisley and Cary Hiles for a one-hitter against the Harrisburg Senators. Reading wins it, 5-4.
August 27, 2012: At Reading, the Phils beat Binghamton, 4-1, behind a strong performance by Trevor May and another homer run by Darin Ruf. May fans 9 while surrendering just one run on two hits over 8.0 innings for his 10th win. Ruf’s homer is his 18th in August, doubling his total from the season’s first four months and drawing him to within one of Ryan Howard’s all-time franchise mark of 37.
August 27, 2013: At Reading, the Fightin Phils win a wild one with Richmond, 9-8, as the home team squanders a 5-run 9th inning lead before rallying for the W. Still leading 7-4 with two outs and a man on 3rd, Reading falls apart after Seth Rosin mishandles a slow grounder that should have been the game’s final out. Instead, the Flying Squirrels take advantage by following Rosin’s error with back-to-back doubles off Hector Neris, the first tying the game and the second giving Richmond the lead. But Reading bounces back in the bottom of the 9th, walking off with a dramatic win when Jim Murphy clouts his 22nd homer of the season, a 2-run shot with one out.
August 27, 2015: At Reading, Brock Stassi hits 2 home runs, both with a man aboard and 2 outs, and knocks in 4 in an 8-3 win over Bowie. His second homer, which follows Andrew Knapp’s game-tying RBI double, gives Reading the lead for good.
August 27, 2017: At Reading, Christian Marrero hits Reading’s first grand slam at home that season in the 8th inning to rally the Phils past Harrisburg, 7-4. He had walked in 3 of his previous 4 plate appearances.
August 27, 2018: At Richmond, Tyler Viza continues his string of quality starts by holding the Flying Squirrels scoreless for 7.0 innings in a 7-0 Reading victory. Viza allows just 3 hits while striking out a season-high 11 batters for his third win. The Squirrels are shut out for the third straight game.
August 27, 2023: At Harrisburg, the R-Phils shutout the Senators 2-0, thanks to six-strong frames from David Parkinson. Oliver Dunn tripled to knock in a run and the bullpen combined for three-hitless innings, finished by Orion Kerkering’s third Reading save. Parkinson finishes a stellar month of August with a 3-1 record and 1.26 ERA over five starts.
August 28, 1908: At Johnstown, Curt Weigand’s 5-hit performance leads an 18-hit attack as Reading beats the Johnnies, 8-6. Six different Pretzels have multi-hit games, including Frank Baker, who raps two singles and a double.
August 28, 1917: At Circus Maximus, the Reading Pretzels suffer a humiliating 11-5 defeat to Scranton in a New York State League game. As if losing to a Miners team that had dropped 22 consecutive decisions isn’t bad enough, the Reading squad is beaten by their own groundskeeper, Mal Gift. On loan for the afternoon, Gift tosses a complete game, hits an RBI single and scores a run for the visitors. Reading police officer Ollie Ruoff also plays for Scranton, rapping two hits and scoring a pair while playing a flawless third base.
August 28, 1955: At Albany, the Reading Indians sweep the Senators, 5-3 and 6-5, to capture the Eastern League pennant. It is the Indians’ 15th win in 17 tries against cellar-dwelling Albany. Reading swats four homers on the day, including Roger Maris’ 19th of the year.
August 28, 1971: Reading Phillies pitcher Mike Wallace no-hits the Manchester Yankees in a
seven inning contest. Reading wins the game 2-0.
August 28, 1988: At Reading, Ken Griffey, Jr. goes 2-for-4 and homers in the 4th inning but the R-Phils beat the Vermont Mariners, 8-4. Reading’s Julio Machado had retired all 11 batters he had faced until Griffey’s homer. Steve DeAngelis leads the offense by going 2-for-4 with a 3-run homer.
August 28, 1993: At New Britain, Steve Bieser has 4 hits and 3 RBI in Reading’s 9-4 win.
August 28, 1995: At Reading, Tommy Eason caps a 4-RBI game with a game-winning 2-run double as the Phils walk away with a 7-6 win over Bowie.
August 28, 2005: At Reading, Chris Roberson collects three singles to pass Tommy Barrett for the R-Phils’ all-time single season hit record. Roberson’s 163rd hit is an infield single in the 5th inning off Bowie’s Kurt Birkins. The R-Phils win their final home game of the season, 3-0, thanks in large part to Josue Matos, who lasts 8.0 innings, giving up only four hits while striking out five.
August 28, 2006: At Reading, Peeter Ramos’s walk-off solo homer in the bottom of the 7th beats New Britain, 4-3, in the first game of a double-header. The Rock Cats take the nightcap, 8-5.
August 28, 2008: At Reading, Connecticut clobbers the Phillies in their final home game of the season, 11-3. The loss is Reading’s record-breaking 86th of the season.
August 28, 2012: At Reading, Darin Ruf equals Ryan Howard’s franchise record of 37 home runs in a season with a 2-run blast in the 6th inning, tying the game at 8-8 in the process. Jake Fox follows Ruf’s historic bomb with a homer in the next at-bat to give Reading a 9-8 lead. Tyson Gillies (HR, 2 R, 3 RBI), Cody Asche (2B, 3 R) and Tommy Joseph (HR, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R) all contribute 3 hits as the Phillies go on to beat Binghamton, 12-8, and push their lead in the wildcard chase to 4.0 games.
August 28, 2015: At Reading, Dylan Cozens goes 1-for-4 with a home run and 4 RBI in his first Double-A game as Reading rallies from a 4-3 deficit to beat Bowie, 9-4. Six Reading players have multi-hit games. Reinier Roibal goes 2.1 innings of scoreless relief and picks up his 4th win of the month, finishing August 4-0 with a save, 15 strikeouts and no earned runs allowed in 15.2 innings of work.
August 28, 2018: At Richmond, the Flying Squirrels’ scoreless streak reaches a franchise-record 33 innings before they rally for 4 runs in the 7th inning. But Reading gets the last laugh as the Fightin Phils score one in the 8th and another in the 9th to secure a 5-4 win. Malquin Canelo’s RBI single plates Deivi Grullon with the deciding run.
August 29, 1916: At Utica, the Reading Pretzels sweep the Utes in a NY State League double-
header, 6-2 and 25-3. In the second game, Reading collects 20 hits, 17 of them singles, and
strands a mere three runners on the base paths in the seven inning tilt. Utica contributes seven
errors to the Pretzels’ cause. An 11-run 6th puts the game away for Reading.
August 29, 1917: At Circus Maximus, Reading raps out 20 hits, six of them triples, and uses a 7-
run 8th inning to rally by Scranton, 13-7. Catcher Ducky Holmes leads the charge with four hits,
including three triples.
August 29, 1999: At Harrisburg, the Phillies suffer a demoralizing 20-6 defeat at the hands of the
Senators as Jason Camilli goes 3-for-5 with 6 RBI. Harrisburg pounds out 20 hits in the game.
August 29, 2003: At Bowie, Jeff Inglin goes 2-for-5 and drives in three runs - the last of which
gives him 100 runs batted in for the season - as the Phillies beat the Baysox, 5-2. Inglin becomes
the first Reading Phillie since Willie Darkis (1983) to reach 100 RBI.
August 29, 2007: At Altoona, Greg Jacobs goes 3-for-5 with his 20th homer, two doubles, two runs and three RBI as the Phils beat the Curve, 8-2. The two doubles were Jacobs’ 37th and 38th on the season, bringing him to within one of the R-Phils all-time record for doubles in a season.
August 29, 2010: At Reading, Governor Mifflin grad Zach Lutz’s 2-run homer in the top of the 9th lifts Binghamton past the R-Phils, 4-2.
August 29, 2013: At Reading, on the last home date of the season, the Fightin Phils record a crazy walk-off victory over Richmond for the third time in four games. Rallying once again from a 6-1 hole, the Fightin Phils tie the game with 2 runs in the 8th, then win it in bizarre fashion in the 9th when Cody Hall uncorks a wild pitch on an intentional walk to plate the winning run. Maikel Franco slides home from 3rd without a throw as Hall’s first pitch to Matt Tolbert sails to the backstop.
August 29, 2014: At Trenton, Aaron Nola picks up his second Double-A win, tossing 5.0 scoreless innings in a 3-0 victory over the Thunder. He allows 4 hits and strikes out 2.
August 29, 2016: At Reading, Ricardo Pinto improves to 6-6 in a 7-1 win over Portland. Pinto does not surrender a run over 7.0 innings, allowing just 3 hits and a walk while striking out 2. Christian Marrero continues his torrid month of August by going 3-for-5 with 2 doubles, 2 RBIs and a run scored out of the leadoff spot. Dylan Cozens goes 1-for-4 with 2 RBIs, ending a 9-game skid in which he was 1-for-35 with 19 K’s. He also avoids striking out for the first time since August 4 (21 straight games).
August 30, 1955: At Schenectady, Jake Striker strikes out nine, walks two and hurls a one-hit shutout for Reading. His only blemish in the 2-0 win is a single in the 1st inning by Larry Novak.
August 30, 1977: Former Reading Phillie and Eastern League MVP Marlon Byrd is born in Boynton Beach, Florida. Byrd had one of the most offensively dominant seasons by an R-Phil during the 2001 season. He fell only two home runs short of a 30-30 season, which would have been the second in Eastern League history.
August 30, 1989: Tim Mauser throws the Phillies’ second 7-inning no-hitter of the season, blanking New Britain, 9-0, in the second game of a double-header.
August 30, 1990: At Williamsport, Andy Ashby’s streak of 30 consecutive scoreless innings comes to an end in the 2nd inning of the R-Phils’ 3-2 loss to the Bills.
August 30, 1994: At Reading, Jon Zuber nails a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 9th to lift the Phils past Albany, 9-7.
August 30, 1997: Baseballtown home run king Dan Held hits his 53rd and final home run as a
Reading Phillie in a 2-0 win over Binghamton. Rich Hunter tosses a 5-hit shutout.
August 30, 1998: With a crowd of 8,172, Reading surpasses 400,000 fans in a single season for the first time in franchise history. Reading wins the game, 9-3, over New Britain thanks to nine extra base hits. Eddie Rivero knocks two home runs while Kirk Pierce hits two doubles and a homer.
August 30, 2004: At Reading, John Castellano goes 2-for-3 in the Phils’ 6-4 win over Erie and is promoted to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after the game. His final batting average is .340, the highest in Reading Phillies history.
August 30, 2006: At Reading, Brian Sellier’s walk-off homer on the first pitch in bottom of the 7th inning gives the Phils a 3-2 win and a double-header split with New Britain. After watching the games, Baseballtown legend “Broadway” Charlie Wagner quietly passes away in the stadium parking lot at the age of 93.
August 30, 2010: At Reading, Timo Perez’s 2-run home run caps a 3-run rally in the bottom of the 11th as Reading rallies to beat New Britain, 7-6. The win keeps the R-Phils a perfect 8-0 against the Rock Cats on the season.
August 30, 2012: At Reading, in the final home game of the regular season, Darin Ruf homers for the 38th time, setting the franchise record for home runs in a single season. Ruf’s dinger is a 3-run shot in a 6-run 2nd inning and comes off Kutztown University product Darin Gorski. It is also his 20th HR in August, tying him with Sammy Sosa for the professional record for homers in a month. Justin Friend enters the game with the bases loaded in the 9th and induces a 1-2-3 double play to nail down the 7-2 victory. It is Friend’s 24th save in 24 chances, tying the franchise record in that department.
August 30, 2015: At Reading, Bowie scores 4 runs in the top of the 1st, but the Fightin Phils plate 7 over the 2nd and 3rd innings en route to a wild 9-8 victory. Angelo Mora goes 3-for-3 with a home run and 2 RBI while Brodie Greene is 2-for-4 with 3 RBI. Zooperstars-style head shots of Fightin Phils players are nixed after just 2 (J.P. Crawfish and Andrew Gnat) appear on the video board.
August 30, 2023: At Reading, Phillies No. 2 Prospect Mick Abel tossed his second-straight strong start. He goes five innings, allowing just one run on two hits, with five strikeouts. Carlos De La Cruz hits his 22nd home run of the season and Baron Radcliff hits a ball that lands on Route 61 in right field as Reading falls 5-3 to New Hampshire.
August 30, 2024: At Somerset, five pitchers, all relievers, combine in a 2-0 shutout win over the Patriots. Carlos Francisco, Nelson L. Alvarez, Andrew Baker and Andrew Walling all went two innings, and Tommy McCollum tossed a scoreless ninth inning for his 10th save. Cade Fergus his a two-run single with bases loaded and two outs in the top of the seventh.
August 31, 1987: At Williamsport, Bills catcher Dave Bresnahan pulls off one of the all-time greatest stunts by tossing a peeled potato into left field in an attempt to fool Reading base runner Rick Lundblade. Lundblade scampers home only to be tagged by Bresnahan, who is still holding the real ball in his mitt. After a period of confusion, Lundblade is ruled safe. Meanwhile, Bresnahan is released a day later by Williamsport.
August 31, 1994: At Reading, the Phils beat Albany in their last at-bat for the second straight game as Gary Bennett drives home the game-winner with a single in the 12th. The final is 5-4.
August 31, 1997: At Reading, Robert Dodd strikes out eight in four scoreless innings of relief as the Phillies top Harrisburg, 4-3 in 11 innings.
August 31, 2003: At Bowie, Nate Espy goes 5-for-6 with a grand slam, double, three runs scored and five RBI to lead Reading past Bowie, 10-9 in 10 innings. Espy is the first R-Phil since Pete Rose, Jr. in 2000 to collect five safeties in a game. Jeff Inglin and Aaron McNeal add three hits apiece.
August 31, 2005: At Harrisburg, Ryan Barthelemy’s diving stop at first base starts a 3-2-4-5 triple play that is made possible when two Senators find themselves occupying third base. After Barthelemy steps on first, catcher Tim Gradoville, second baseman Brian Hitchcox and third baseman Nate Grindell track down both runners to complete the wild sequence. Despite the R-Phils first triple play in over eight years, Harrisburg wins the game, 5-3.
August 31, 2006: At Reading, on a night honoring the late Charlie Wagner and fallen police officer Scott Wertz, the R-Phils set a modern day franchise record by drawing 9,816 fans for the final home game of the season. The fans are treated to a Phillies victory as they rally for five runs in the 8th en route to the 6-3 decision. Twin Valley grad Nick Mattioni earns his 5th and final win in a Phils uniform.
August 31, 2009: At Reading, the R-Phils give their playoff chances a major boost by sweeping Bowie in a wild double-header that lasts until half past midnight. Game 1 lasts 11 innings, with Freddy Galvis scoring the winning run on Michael Spidale’s infield single for a 5-4 victory. The nightcap also goes extras and ends in a walk-off victory. Kevin Mahar singles through the hole at shortstop with one out to score Quintin Berry from second to give Reading a 4-3 win in 9 innings.
August 31, 2015: At Reading, the Fightin Phils clinch a playoff berth with 6-2 win over Binghamton, rallying for 4 runs in the 7th and 2 more in the 8th. J.P. Crawford’s 2-run double gives Reading the lead and Dylan Cozens’ 2-run homer in the 8th puts it away. Jake Thompson is the winner (7.0 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 4 K) while Andrew Knapp goes 0-for-3 but still finishes with a .404 batting average in August and is named the EL Player of the Month (8 HR, 28 RBI).
August 31, 2016: At Reading, Dylan Cozens ties Darin Ruf’s franchise record by hitting home run number 38, a 2-run shot in the 1st inning of a 14-6 win over Portland. Cozens also ties Greg Luzinski’s club mark for RBIs with his 120th, driving home Christian Marrero with an 8th inning single. Cozens is 3-for-4 with a home run, double, 4 RBIs and 2 runs while Marrero goes 3-for-4 with a homer, 3 runs and a walk, finishing with a .548 batting average (23-for-42), .672 on-base percentage, 11 RBIs and 14 runs in August. Jorge Alfaro also wields a big bat, going 4-for-5 with a double, 2 RBIs and 4 runs as all nine Reading starters drive in a run.
August 31, 2017: At Reading, Odubel Herrera goes 2-for-2 with a 2-run homer, a walk and 2 runs scored on a rehab assignment, his first taste of minor league baseball in the Phillies organization. Reading falls to New Hampshire, 8-6, in their final home game.
August 31, 2023: At Reading, the R-Phils battle back from a 3-0 deficit to beat New Hampshire 4-3. Ethan Wilson homers, as does Baron Radcliff for the second-straight night. Radcliff’s home run traveled an estimated 427 feet and cleared the pool deck in right field. Orion Kerkering earned his fourth Double-A save.
August 31, 2024: At Somerset, the Fightin Phils win 7-1 as Moises Chace follows up his 10-strikeout performance the week prior with another dominant effort. Chace sets career highs in innings pitched (6) and strikeouts (13) for his second Double-A victory. His 13 strikeouts were the most by a Reading pitcher in 2024 and the most since Spencer Howard had 12 on Sept. 4, 2019, at Trenton. It’s the first time a R-Phil has exactly 13 punchouts in a contest since Adam Walker on May 10, 2001, at Portland. Chace retired 18-of-19 hitters he faced and the final 16. 13 of his 18 outs were via strikeouts (72%). As a whole, Reading pitching did not allow a base runner from the bottom of the first (two outs) to the bottom of the ninth (two outs), which was 25 in a row retired in total. Fightins’ pitching also matched a season-high with 16 strikeouts on the night. Offensively, Justin Crawford and Ethan Wilson each homered, with a three-run and two-run shot, respectively. Erick Brito also had a RBI double and scored on a passed ball in the same inning.
