COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps experienced one of the best seasons in franchise history on the field, but it is an off-the-field star that is now being recognized. Earlier in the year the Beercheese Poutine prevailed in the Whitecaps eighth annual Fan Food Voting contest and now this tasty dish has prevailed against all other ballpark food to take the title of "Best New Food Item," according to Ballpark Digest. Ballpark Digest is a leading web resource for ballpark news and coverage of the culture of baseball.
"This is an exciting award!" said Whitecaps Food and Beverage Director Matt Timon. "We take great pride in serving quality food items at Fifth Third Ballpark and this is one food items that was a focal point of the selections this season."
In February, fans submitted items they would like to see served this season and the Beercheese Poutine was nominated by Muskegon native Rusty Morningstar. This delicious combination of pulled pork, bbq sauce, beer cheese and green onions served over waffle fries was one of ten items whittled down by the Whitecaps front office and won the voting later that month.
"When I saw the Whitecaps were looking for food ideas I thought this would be a great addition to the Fifth Third Ballpark menu. I can't wait for the fans to give it a try. Heck, I'll be there Opening Day and I may be the first in line!" said Morningstar when he was notified in March his culinary delight was the voting winner.
Timon loved this choice. "It's been interesting to see the evolution of the fans' wants. When we first started this promotion, outrageous items like the Declaration of Indigestion (foot long hot dog and cheesesteak combination) and the Baco (taco shell made of bacon) won, but for the last few years they've voted for taste. This year they chose wisely as the Beercheese Poutine tastes amazing! I can see this becoming a fan favorite for years to come."
Fans can get this award winner when the Whitecaps kick off the 25th season at home on Thursday, April 5 at 6:35p.m. against the South Bend Cubs. The 2018 schedule can be downloaded at www.whitecapsbaseball.com and season tickets, groups and mini plans will go on sale later this year.
