WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Jan. 13, 2020) - Managing the Dash for the first time since 2013, Ryan Newman will lead Winston-Salem in 2020, the Chicago White Sox announced Monday. Pitching coach Danny Farquhar, hitting coach Charlie Poe, athletic trainer Carson Wooten and performance coach George Timke will join Newman in the dugout for the upcoming year.
Newman's return marks the third time in Dash history (2009-present) in which a manager has returned for another season with Winston-Salem, joining Joe McEwing (2009, 2010) and Tommy Thompson (2012, 2014). In 2013, Newman led the Dash to a 71-69 overall record. Last year, the 40-year-old was the manager for Low-A Kannapolis, where the club finished with an overall record of 64-74.
Newman played collegiately at Scottsdale Community College (Ariz.) before signing as an undrafted free agent with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2002. The California native finished his three-year Minor League playing career in the Carolina League with the Lynchburg Hillcats in 2004.
Following his playing days, Newman joined the coaching ranks in 2005 and made his debut as a manager with the rookie-level Oneonta Tigers (Detroit) in 2008. The following year, Newman began his career with the White Sox, guiding the then-Bristol White Sox. After holding the same job in 2010, Newman worked with rookie-level Great Falls for the next two seasons, helping the Voyagers win the Pioneer League Championship in 2011.
Newman spent the 2014 and 2015 seasons as an assistant coach with Triple-A Charlotte, working with former Dash manager Joel Skinner, before becoming the manager for Double-A Birmingham in 2016. He held that role for the 2018 season, with a year managing the AZL White Sox sandwiched in between. His father, Jeff, spent nine seasons in the big leagues from 1976-1984, playing for Oakland and Boston.
A veteran of the big leagues for eight seasons, Farquhar will be in his first year as a pitching coach. After retiring in 2019, Farquhar joined the White Sox as a Minor League pitching coordinator. The 32-year-old was drafted by Toronto in the 10th round in 2008, and he made his major league debut in 2011 with the Blue Jays.
Farquhar later pitched in the Majors for the Seattle Mariners (2013-2015), Tampa Bay Rays (2016-2017) and the White Sox (2017-2018). He also spent time in the Yankees and Athletics system during his playing days. He finished his MLB career with a 10-15 record, 3.93 ERA and 309 strikeouts over 272.2 innings pitched and 253 appearances.
For the fifth time in the last six years, Poe will serve as Winston-Salem's hitting coach. Last season, Poe was the hitting coach for Birmingham, where he worked with superstar prospects Luis Robert and Nick Madrigal. He helped each player earn a promotion to Triple-A Charlotte before the end of the season.
In 2018, Poe was the guiding force for an offense that led the Carolina League in runs scored, hits, slugging percentage and OPS. Over his previous four years with the Dash, Poe worked with current White Sox Eloy Jimenez, Zack Collins, Danny Mendick and Adam Engel. As a player, Poe suited up professionally from 1990-2002, including three seasons at the Triple-A level.
Wooten joins the Dash staff for the first time. He served as the athletic trainer for Great Falls during the 2019 season. Timke returns to the Dash for his fifth consecutive year. During his first season with Winston-Salem in 2016, Timke earned the Carolina League's Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year award, as announced by the Professional Baseball Strength and Conditioning Coaches Society (PBSCC).
The Suffern, N.Y. native began his White Sox tenure with Great Falls in 2013 before working in Kannapolis in 2014 and 2015. His professional career began with the Royals organization in 2009.
"Ryan Newman's wealth of baseball experience will be beneficial, and we are thrilled to have him back in Winston-Salem," Dash President C.J. Johnson said. "We're also excited to bring back Charlie and George and welcome Danny and Carson to the Dash."
Three members of the Dash's 2019 field staff have been placed in higher levels within the White Sox system. Last year's manager Justin Jirschele has been named the manager for Double-A Birmingham, where he will be joined by athletic trainer Hyeon Kim. Former Dash pitching coach Matt Zaleski is set to work with Triple-A Charlotte as the Knights pitching coach this year.
The Dash begin their 11th season at BB&T Ballpark on Thursday, April 16, against the Down East Wood Ducks. Ticket packages are on sale now, and fans can call (336) 714-2287 to purchase their tickets today.
