Summary

The Richmond Flying Squirrels used early runs and strong pitching to shutout the Akron RubberDucks 4-0 on Friday night at Canal Park.

Turning Point

Richmond jumped on the board quickly as leadoff hitter Grant McCray hit the second pitch of the game into the bullpens to put the Flying Squirrels ahead 1-0.

Mound Presence

Ryan Webb settled in after the early run and kept Richmond off the scoreboard until the fifth. The Flying Squirrels got to the Akron lefty for two in the fifth and one in the sixth. In total, Webb tossed six innings allowing four runs while striking out four. Jordan Jones, Lenny Torres Jr. and Ross Carver each tossed scoreless innings in relief.

Duck Tales

Akron was held in check for most of the night as four Richmond pitchers scattered five Akron hits. Alexfri Planez had Akron’s lone extra base hit by doubling with two out in the first. The RubberDucks best chance to crack the scoreboard in fourth when Aaron Bracho singled and Kody Huff walked to put runners on first and second with one out, but a double play ball would end the inning without a run.

Notebook
