Barstad leads Sky Carp to walk-off win

BELOIT—If there’s one thing that’s become apparent through the first two games of the 2024 season, it’s this: The Beloit Sky Carp have a flair for the dramatic.

After an exciting 3-1 victory over Cedar Rapids on opening night, the Sky Carp rallied for a 2-1 walk-off win on Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the ninth, Carlos Santiago and Torin Montgomery drew back-to-back walks with one out.

After a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, Cameron Barstad cracked a line drive single to easily plate both runners and move Beloit to 2-0 on the young season.

For the second straight game, the pitching was outstanding for the Carp. Starter Ike Buxton allowed just one unearned run in 5 1-3 innings of work, while relievers Anderson Pilar, Kyle Crigger and Dale Stanavich each threw scoreless outings.

Stanavich (1-0) worked a scoreless ninth to pick up the win, while Pilar stranded a pair of inherited runners in the sixth to keep the Sky Carp in the game.

The Sky Carp and Kernels will go at it again Sunday at 1:05 p.m., with gates at ABC Supply Stadium opening at noon. It’s Sunday Family Funday, with kids able to run the bases following the game, and families able to play catch in the outfield after the base run!
