Myrtle Beach, SC – The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (1-1) struggled to find a timely hit on Saturday night at Pelicans Ballpark, falling to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (1-1) 9-2 in the first loss of the season. The lineup went just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and scattered six hits across the game.

Juan Soto (L, 0-1) started his Single-A debut strong with two scoreless frames before running into trouble during the third inning. He allowed a pair of singles and uncorked a pair of wild pitches later in the inning that brought two runs home. Wally Soto also connected for an RBI single and Myrtle Beach carried a 3-0 lead after three.

Ben Petschke tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, but got caught up in a six-run Myrtle Beach sixth inning that broke the game open 9-1.

Second baseman Alejandro Nunez put together an impressive debut at the bottom of the order, going 3-for-4 with a fourth-inning double and seventh-inning triple. Nunez would score in the seventh on a dropped third strike for Fayetteville’s second and final run of the night.

The three-game weekend series continues on Sunday night in a rubber match at 6:05 PM. Fayetteville is scheduled to start RHP Alain Pena and Myrtle Beach hands the ball to RHP Alfredo Romero.
