Worcester, Massachusetts (May 3, 2024) – Tyler Phillips turned in his fourth Quality Start of the season but it wasn’t enough as a late Worcester Red Sox (14-16) rally downed the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (12-16) 4-2 on Friday night at Polar Park.

Enmanuel Valdez socked a solo homer in the first inning, his first of the year, to get the scoring started for the WooSox.

In the second, Cory Rosier bounced a single through the left side to score Niko Kavadas from second base to double the WooSox advantage to 2-0.

The ‘Pigs finally got on the board and tied the game in the seventh. The first three hitters reached to load the bases before Kody Clemens legged out a fielder’s choice, driving in a run, to break up the shutout. With runners at first and third, Darick Hall produced a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2.

The WooSox reclaimed the lead in the eighth. Catcher’s interference and a double put runners in scoring position immediately for the WooSox. After a groundout, a wild pitch scored the go-ahead run before Rosier knocked in an insurance run with his second RBI single of the day.

Matt Kroon delivered a pinch-hit double with two outs in the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate for the ‘Pigs, but Clemens grounded out to second to end the game.

Lucas Luetge (2-0) earned the win out of the bullpen for the WooSox, firing 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing just a hit, striking out two.

Kolby Allard (0-2) took the loss for the IronPigs, allowing two runs (one earned) in two-thirds of an innings on two hits.

Phillips worked around a career-high seven walks, striking out six and allowing just two runs on six hits in 6.2 innings.

The ‘Pigs and WooSox square off again on Friday, May 3 with first pitch slated for 4:05 p.m. RHP David Buchanan (2-1, 3.56) is slated to go for the IronPigs while the WooSox counter with RHP Justin Hagenman (1-1, 5.40).
