Moore Than a Legacy: Phillies Prospect Robert Moore Swings for Success

Fightins Young Talent Robert Moore Flourishes from Baseball Roots
May 6, 2024

Growing up, Fightins infielder Robert Moore was exposed to the sport of baseball from a young age. His father, Dayton Moore started working in the MLB in 1994 as a scout for the Atlanta Braves. He then worked for the Kansas City Royals organization as the general manager from 2006-2022.

In September 2022, Dayton was hired as the Senior Advisor of Baseball Operations by the reigning World Series Champions, the Texas Rangers.

Robert was 12 years old when the Royals won the American League pennant in 2014. He was 13 when they won the World Series in 2015. After spending an ample amount of time in the GM's booth with his dad, he yearned to become just like the big leaguers.

“Baseball is something we share and love,” said Moore on his relationship with his dad. “It’s easy to talk about baseball after games and get his viewpoints on the games. He and my mom watch every game and my sisters do as well.”

Moore was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the Competitive Balance Round B of the 2022 draft out of the University of Arkansas. He began his professional career in 2022 with the Arizona Complex League Brewers Blue and worked his way up to High-A Wisconsin in 2023. He graduated from the University of Arkansas in 2023 and was the first Razorback in program history to win a Gold Glove Award from ABCA/Rawlings. In high school, he was ranked as the No. 1 player in the state of Kansas and the No. 20 player in the nation by Perfect Game.

The 22-year-old was traded from the Brewers to the Phillies on November 14, 2023, in exchange for Oliver Dunn. Moore has proven to be a very consistent, versatile player throughout his career. He is a switch hitter and solid defender in the infield who leads the team in stolen bases (7) and is second on the team in hits (17) and on-base percentage (.345),

“The game seems to get a little easier every year, just from reps and more at-bats, kind of develop an approach,” said Moore. “I’m trying to cut down strikeouts big time this year, and I’ve been able to do that early on, so I think that’s led to being on base more and more hits and a better average.”

Although this is Moore’s first season in the Phillies organization, he comes to the Fightins with a familiar face in the clubhouse, Casey Martin. The two were teammates at Arkansas in 2020.

“I didn’t even see Casey for about three to four years. Our first day in spring training I went over to his house and we kind of talked and reconnected. It’s been fun playing with Casey again and reconnecting old stories, and different perspectives on how things went.”

Moore is currently the Phillies' No. 26 prospect with a prosperous career ahead. He is a very capable defender on both sides of second base, where his instincts, hands, and ability to slow the game down are assets. He strives to one day bring home a World Series Championship.
