Beloit, WI - After dropping the first five games of this week’s series at ABC Supply Stadium in Beloit, the South Bend Cubs were victorious in the final game on Sunday afternoon against the Beloit Sky Carp in 10 innings, by a final of 8-6.

It’s the first road win for the Cubs since Opening Day on April 5, and gets Nick Lovullo’s team back on track with a heavy set six-game series versus the Quad Cities River Bandits coming up on Tuesday night. It was a back-and-forth series for South Bend, as in the first five games, they held leads in four of them, but were not able to find a victory.

Sunday was different. Tyler Schlaffer got the start for the Cubs, and worked the deepest into a game that he has since undergoing Tommy John Surgery. He got plenty of run support as well, as South Bend laid a six-spot on the Sky Carp in the 2nd inning.

Schlaffer spun together 3.2 innings, and the 2nd inning for the Cubs featured RBI from Reivaj Garcia, Brennen Davis, Yohendrick Pinango, and Brian Kalmer. Davis was 2/5 in the eighth game of his rehab assignment, and Pinango tripled home a pair in that inning.

Pinango also took his 11th walk in 12 games this year. In 2022, he only walked 30 total times in the entire season with South Bend. Last year, he took 40.

The six runs would be all South Bend put together for the rest of regulation. Beloit slowly crept their way back into the game, with three runs in the middle frames. As South Bend was ahead 6-4, the Sky Carp were down to their final out in the bottom of the 9th, with two aboard. Jorge Caballero came up and doubled home two, and tied things up.

Prior to that, Jose Romero got the Cubs out of a bases loaded jam in the 7th, combining for four strikeouts on the day in relief.

However, Beloit forced extras, and to the 10th we went. South Bend wasted little time in the 10th. Pinango was the courtesy runner, and on the first pitch of the inning from Sky Carp righty Dale Stanavich, Kalmer powered a ball into right-center for extra bases. It scored Pinango, and the next batter was Parker Chavers, who barreled a ball over the middle for another tally.

Up 8-6, Joe Nahas closed out the final three outs for his first save of the year to finish things off. With the win, the Cubs snap a six-game winless skid, and take on Quad Cities on Tuesday night. First pitch from Four Winds Field is set for 7:05 PM on Tuesday.
