Brooklyn, N.Y. - It took ten innings but the 'Birds got a 5-4 win over the Brooklyn Cyclones. A wild pitch ended up being the difference with stellar defense shutting down the Cyclones in the 10th.
NOT AGAIN: Brooklyn's first inning reminded us of yesterday when they scored six runs in it. After three batters the bases were loaded with no outs. A double-play ball scored Ross Adolph and a balk brought home Carlos Cortes. They both singled off of Jimmy Murphy to start the game. It was 2-0 after one
SECOND SERVINGS: With two outs in the second the IronBirds got it going. Robbie Thorburn and Alexis Torres both singled. Nick Horvath brought Thorburn home with an RBI double. Torres and Horvath scored on an error with Alfredo Gonzalez at the plate. Aberdeen took a 3-2 lead.
NO DOUBTER: Robert Nuestrom saw his second at bat in the third inning. He clobbered a ball with 105 MPH exit velocity over the right field wall to extend Aberdeen's lead to 4-2.
QUALI-JIMMY: Jimmy Murphy earned a quality start through six innings. He struggled a little with command early but bounced back with five scoreless after the first.
CALL IT A COMEBACK: In the 8th, the Cyclones picked up the two runs they needed. Tyler Joyner gave up four hits and a walk in the frame including RBIs from Brian Sharp and Walter Rasquin. Brooklyn tied the game at four.
FREE BASEBALL: Neither team scored in the 9th so it came down to the 10th. In the top half Nuestrom moved Escarra over from second to third on a groundout. Escarra scored on a wild pitch to take a lead into the bottom of the 10th.
FIREWORKS (literally): Ryan Conroy came in to get the save. On Coney Island, fireworks start at 10 P.M. no matter what. So during the inning there were fireworks just over the wall in center. Willy Yahn threw out Wagner Lagrange at the plate on a slow chopper to third as the biggest out of the inning. Conroy pealed the deal and Aberdeen won 5-4 in ten innings.
UP NEXT: A rubber match. Tomorrow at 6 P.M. its 'Birds and Cyclones in game three from MCU Park.
