ZEBULON – Lynchburg’s Jake Fox went 2-for-2 with three runs and starter Will Dion worked through four perfect innings with six strikeouts as the Hillcats defeated the Carolina Mudcats 8-1 on Thursday night at Five County Stadium.
The Mudcats (7-5), playing as the Carolina Micro Brews, were held to just two hits in the loss. Brannon Jordan started for Carolina and ended up with the loss despite allowing just one earned run on three hits over five innings pitched. Jordan (0-1) also walked four and struck out five.
Dion started and held Carolina hitless over four perfect frames before leaving the game after reaching 44 pitches (33 strikes). Reny Artiles followed and went on to allow just one run and two hits over three and 1/3 innings while earning the victory. Artiles (1-0) also walked four and struck out five.
The Hillcats led 2-0 through the seventh before scoring five runs and totaling six hits in the eighth. All five runs, and all six hits, where allowed in by reliever Carlos Rodriguez. Milan Tolentino started the rally with a double before scoring moments late on a RBI single from Fox. Will Bartlett followed with a double to score Fox and a single from Victor Planchart brought in Bartlett. An Isaiah Greene single then scored Planchart and knocked Rodriguez out of the game.
Rodriguez first worked a scoreless seventh before the five-run, and six-hit, Lynchburg eighth. He finished his outing with five runs, seven hits and a walk allowed in his relief appearance.
Jolon Zhao walked two, struck out one, and left the bases loaded while making his Carolina debut in relief of Rodriguez. Zhao worked the remainder of the eighth, but left before the ninth. Jakob Brustoski followed and ended up allowing one last Lynchburg run while walking three and striking out two over an inning of work.
The loss was Carolina’s first at home this season, while the victory was Lynchburg’s first on the road.
