Carolina Suffers Record Setting 21-3 Loss

ZEBULON – Delmarva’s Billy Cook doubled and scored a run in the second, hit a grand slam in the fifth, and a solo home run and a grand slam in the eighth while leading the Shorebirds to a 21-3 victory over the Mudcats on Saturday night at Five County Stadium. Cook went 4-for-5 overall with four runs, a double, three home runs and a Delmarva franchise record nine RBI in the series clinching victory for the Shorebirds.

The Shorebirds (61-46) led from start to finish after scoring twice in the second to take a 2-0 lead before going up 4-0 on a home run by Coby Mayo in the third. Carolina (62-45) went on to get a run in the last of the third to make it 4-1, but Delmarva broke the game open with five in the fifth, eight runs in the eighth and three runs in the ninth.

The loss dropped the Mudcats into second place behind the Down East Wood Ducks in the Low-A East Central division standings. It also dropped Carolina into a tie for the league’s third-best record overall and second playoff spot.

Zach Mort started and suffered his first loss with the Mudcats after working into the fifth and finishing with eight runs allowed on nine hits. Mort (3-1, 4.43) left the game with the bases loaded and with the Shorebirds leading 5-1. That lead then ballooned to 9-1 immediately after he left as reliever Nate Peden was greeted to the game by Cook’s first of two grand slams.

Peden also gave up a solo home run to Connor Norby in the seventh and another home run to Cook in the eighth while allowing three home runs overall. Peyton Long eventually took over for Peden in the eighth but would go on to allow Cook’s second grand slam of the game in the eighth while seeing the Shorebirds go up 18-2. Peaaden allowed five runs on five hits over two and 1/3 innings in the game. Long also allowed five runs and did so on three hits.

Outfielder Noah Campbell would then pitch the ninth where he allowed a three-run home run to Colton Cowser. That home run was Cowser’s first with the Shorebirds and Delmarva’s sixth home run of the game. Campbell’s appearance on the mound was his second of the season and second of the series.

Carolina ended up allowing a franchise record 21 runs in the loss. Their six home runs allowed were additionally the second most in franchise history. The Mudcats also allowed a season high 19 hits in the lop-sided loss.

Jean Pinto started for the Shorebirds and earned the victory while striking out a season high 11 batters over six innings pitched. Pinto (1-1, 1.96) allowed just one unearned run (two total) and scattered four hits while earning his first victory of the season.

Alex Binelas went 3-for-4 with three doubles and two runs for the Mudcats in the loss.
