FREDERICKSBURG – The Fredericksburg Nationals scored 14 unanswered runs, including six in the eighth, while defeating the Carolina Mudcats 14-1 in the fourth game of a six-game series on Friday night at Virginia Credit Union Stadium. Carolina was charged with five errors in the loss, including three by infielder Alberis Ferrer.
The Mudcats (4-3) scored a run in the opening frame against starter Rodney Theophile, but that would all that Carolina would muster against Theophile (1-0, 0.00) and the Fredericksburg (5-2) relief staff of Peyton Glavine and Orlando Ribalta. Theophile struck out six, walked one and allowed just the lone unearned run over six innings while getting the victory.
Carolina’s starter Carlos Rodriguez pitched into the second, but allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits over an inning and 1/3 while taking the loss. Rodriguez (1-1, 8.31) allowed two runs in the first, including one on a wild pitch, and was charged with three runs allowed in the second before leaving the game. He nearly worked his way out of a bases loaded jam in the first, but a fielding error by Jesus Chirinos prolonged the inning and allowed the first of 14 runs in the game for Fredericksburg. The second run of that first inning scored on a wild pitch from Rodriguez.
The FredNats led 2-1 the first, but went on to add three more runs in the second with a home run from Junior Martina and another costly error by the Mudcats. The Nationals also added two runs in the third against reliever Karlos Morales and one more in the fourth against reliever Brannon Jordan. That lone run was all that Jordan allowed in his appearance as he worked through four innings with eight strikeouts against four walks.
Fredericksburg later scored six runs in the eighth, with all six charged to reliever Jakob Brustoski. That inning began with four straight walks, a RBI double from Geraldi Diaz, and then a three-run home run from Sammy Infante. In all, Brustoski walked five and allowed six runs on two hits in his appearance. He did not record an out and eventually gave way to Pablo Garabitos who then finished the game.
HOME RUNS:
Fredericksburg: Martina (1, 2nd inning off Rodriguez, 0 on, 1 out); Infante (2, 8th inning off Brustoski, 2 on, 0 out).
