LYNCHBURG – Jackson Chourio and Jeferson Quero both homered during a five-run eighth and Christian Tripp earned his third win of the season as the Carolina Mudcats defeated the Lynchburg Hillcats 7-4 in a game that began on Thursday night, but was suspended due to rain and finished on Friday night in Lynchburg.
The Mudcats (27-22) struck first with a run scoring single from Jheremy Vargas in the second off Lynchburg (26-21) starter, and Rocky Mount, NC native, Reid Johnston. The resulting 1-0 lead held through the fifth and into the sixth before Jesus Chirinos brought in a run with an RBI single off reliever Franco Aleman.
Carolina led 2-0 going into the Lynchburg half of the sixth, but the Hillcats would go on to tie things up at 2-2 with a run scoring triple from Jake Fox and a RBI double from Joe Burgos. The Burgos double came off starter Stiven Cruz and knocked him out of the game. Cruz had gone through five complete without allowing a run before giving up the two runs in the sixth. In all, Cruz ended up going through five and 1/3 innings with two runs allowed, seven hits, one walk and five strikeouts.
Tripp (3-0) finished the sixth and worked a scoreless seventh in place of Cruz and ended up getting the win as the Mudcats took the lead and broke the game open with a five run eighth.
Chourio started the eighth with a home run to break a 2-2 tie and Quero kept it going with his two-run home run. Shortly after Quero's home run the game would enter a rain delay, thus forcing it to be suspended in the eighth. It resumed on June 3 in the Carolina half of the eighth where Zack Raabe would add to the lead with a two-run single to make it 7-2 Mudcats.
Michele Vassalotti pitched the final two innings and allowed a couple of runs on one hit. Tripp (3-0), meanwhile, earned the win after tossing an inning and 2/3 with a walk and two strikeouts.
Aleman (0-6) took the loss after allowing five runs and five hits.
