ZEBULON – Eduardo Garcia and Hedbert Perez hit solo home runs over the first and second, but the Myrtle Beach Pelicans scored 10 runs over the first three innings and got a 4-for-6, two homer and eight RBI day from Kevin Alcantara while defeating the Carolina Mudcats 15-6 on Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium.
Alcantara finished a double shy of the cycle while going 4-for-6 with a two-run triple in the first, a single in the second, and three-run home runs in the third and seventh innings. His two-run triple accounted for the first two of five total Myrtle Beach (40-17) runs in the first, while his first of his two three-run home runs accounted for the final three runs of five total runs in the third.
The Mudcats (30-27) committed three errors while allowing four unearned runs and five total runs in the first. They came back with Garcia’s home run in the last of the first and a solo homer from Perez in the second, but ended up allowing five more runs in the third while seeing the Pelicans jump out to a 10-2 lead.
Jeferson Figueroa started and failed to escape the first after being removed from the game after reaching the 35-pitch limit. Figueroa (0-3) walked the first two batters he faced and walked three overall while allowing four unearned runs and five total on two hits.
Brannon Jordan followed and went on to finish the first with one of two inherited runners allowed to score. Jordan later returned for the second and third, but left in the third after walking a batter and committing a throwing error on a bunt back to the mound. Jakob Brustoski would then be brought in for the rest of the third where he went on to allow two inherited runners to score, and three more runs of his own after giving up Alcantara’s first home run.
The Pelicans led 10-2 through the sixth before taking a 13-2 lead with Alcantara’s second homer of the game in the seventh. That home run was a three-run blast that was hit off Miguel Segura who had entered for Brustoski in the fourth. Segura first tossed three scoreless frames before allowing three on Alcantara’s homer in the seventh and two more in the eighth. In all, Segura gave up five runs on five hits over five innings. Karlos Morales pitched the ninth and held the Pelicans scoreless while striking out one and giving up two hits.
Tyler Schlaffer started and earned the win for the Pelicans after working through five innings with two runs on three hits. Both runs scored on the Garcia and Perez homers, but Schlaffer (2-3) worked around those while striking out seven and walking one in the victory.
Relievers Jose Miguel Gonzalez and Johzan Oquendo followed Schlaffer with Gonzalez (H, 1) allowing one run over three innings and Oquendo giving up three runs in the ninth. Jesus Chirinos has a RBI single off Gonzalez in the eighth. Perez and Jheremy Vargas both had run-scoring hits off Oquendo in the ninth for the Mudcats.
The Pelicans won the first and final three games of the six-game set while taking the series 4-2. The loss, combined with a Lynchburg Hillcats victory over the Fredericksburg Nationals on the same day dropped the Mudcats into a three-way tie for first in the Carolina League North first half standings.
