FAYETTEVILLE – Hedbert Perez hit a solo home run in the sixth and doubled in a run in the seventh, Hendry Mendez went 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Brannon Jordan struck out five over four and 2/3 innings in relief, but the Fayetteville Woodpeckers outlasted the Carolina Mudcats 8-6 on Saturday night at SEGRA Stadium.
Carolina (16-16) originally led first after taking a 1-0 lead in the first when Perez walked, stole second and eventually scored on a sac fly from Luis Silva. The 1-0 Carolina lead was short-lived though as the Woodpeckers (12-20) would rally for three runs and two hits in the second. Fayetteville's Yeuris Ramirez had a two-run single and scored a run (with help of two Carolina errors) in the three run second.

Figueroa (0-1) worked the first two innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits in what his first appearance since April 19. Jordan took over in the third and would end up going four and 2/3 innings with three runs allowed on two hits. Jordan also struck out five and walked four. Figueroa walked one and struck out three.
The Mudcats eventually cut the lead down to 5-2 in the fifth after Silva doubled and scored later in the frame on a bases loaded walk from Mendez. The Woodpeckers immediately answered Carolina’s run in the firth with a run of their own in the last of the same inning. That lone run came on a home run for Hamilton off Jordan.
Perez then cut the Fayetteville lead down to 6-3 in the seventh when he connected on what was his third home run of the season. Perez also doubled during Carolina’s two run eighth and ended up going 2-for-3 with two runs, a double, a home run and two RBI.
The Mudcats were down just one at 6-5 after the seventh, but Fayetteville went on to score twice in the eighth while going up 8-5. A passed ball scored the inning’s first run, while a wild pitch from reliever Karlos Morales scored the other.
Carolina’s final run of the game was brought in by Mendez in the ninth after he singled to score Arbert Cipion in the final inning. Mendez went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the Saturday night loss.
Shea Barry started for the Woodpeckers and allowed one run and one hit over two innings while making his first start of the season. He also walked three and struck out two. Carlos Calderon followed in the third and would go on to give up four runs, three hits and three walks. Jacob Coats (2-1) then finished it while totaling seven strikeouts and just one run allowed over the final two and 2/3.
