Yamamoto goes six scoreless in 7-0 victory

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Jordan Yamamoto struck out eight over six scoreless frames and Isan Díaz and Cooper Hummel both hit home runs in the second as the Mudcats defeated the Dash 7-0 on Wednesday night at BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem.

The Mudcats (63-64, 27-32) totaled 14 hits and homered twice while evening the series at a game apiece with the road victory. The shutout win was also Carolina's ninth overall and third shutout win versus the Dash (51-78, 27-32) this season.
Yamamoto (7-4, 2.88) earned the victory while working through his seventh quality start and his fifth scoreless outing of the season. Yamamoto finished with five strikeouts and scattered just four hits over six scoreless frames and improved to 7-4 on the season. He also lowered his overall season earned run average to 2.88 and pitched to a 74 game score.
The game was scoreless through the first until Diaz ignited the Carolina offense with a line drive, opposite field two-run homer (13) down the left field line early in the second. Hummel later added a solo home run (4) in the same frame as the Mudcats took a 3-0 lead on starter Dane Dunning and the Dash.
Carolina followed its three run second with another three run frame in the third and led 6-0 before the fourth. Luis Aviles Jr. had a two-out, two-run single off Dunning (5-7, 3.77) in the third and Trent Clark came through with a RBI single.
Dunning left after the three run third and finished his start with six runs allowed on nine hits. He also walked two and struck out five while reaching 62 pitches in the loss.
Carolina's final run of their 7-0, series tying victory came in the sixth when Corey Ray doubled and scored on a RBI double from Lucas Erceg. The run was the only one allowed by reliever Drew Hasler after he pitched through three innings with four hits allowed following Dunning. Louie Lechich later finished the game with three scoreless innings.
Erceg was 3-for-4 with two runs and a RBI double for Carolina in the 7-0 victory. He also started both three run rallies with a single and walk respectively in the second and third innings. Hummel also had three hits and fell a triple shy of the cycle while going 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and two runs. Aviles went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Diaz was 1-for-5 with a home run as well for Carolina in game two of the three game series.
Yamamoto cruised his way through six and had a 7-0 lead when he left the game. Luke Barker followed and pitched through a scoreless seventh and eighth with two hits allowed and two strikeouts. Parker Berberet later worked the ninth and struck out two in his scoreless frame.
Despite the victory, Carolina remained 7.5 games back of first place Buies Creek in the second half standings as the Astros also won on Wednesday night. Carolina's elimination number fell to four with the Buies Creek victory.
