FINAL GAME BETWEEN SKY SOX AND SOUNDS SUSPENDED
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The final game between the Colorado Springs Sky Sox and Nashville Sounds Thursday afternoon at Security Service Field was suspended after the eighth inning due to a travel curfew set by the league before the start of the contest. The game will be resumed in August when Nashville returns to Colorado Springs and will begin in the ninth inning. At the time of the suspension, Nashville holds a 14-6 lead.
On a turbulent afternoon in Colorado Springs, game four of the series with Nashville got underway, but did include a one-hour and fifth-minute delay from the 11:00 a.m. scheduled first pitch at Security Service Field.
Nashville leadoff batter Jorge Mateo made it a quick breakthrough in the series finale, launching a second-pitch home run to quickly bring it to a 1-0 Sounds lead. But, in the bottom half, the Sky Sox roared back to plate two runs and take a 3-1 lead that was sparked by Mauricio Dubón's one-out single, which also extended his hit streak to 21 games.
In the second, after the Sounds cut the lead to within a run, the Sky Sox added two more runs to make it a 5-2 ball game after Nate Orf collected a one-out single, and Dubon and Ji-Man Choi sailed back-to-back doubles to left field.
Following a scoreless third on each side, the Sounds found another rhythm in the top of the fourth to come back and tie the game. After Tim Dillard relieved starter Aaron Brooks and struck out the first two batters, Sheldon Neuse snuck in a two-out single while Slade Heathcott connected with an RBI double to plate one. Mateo, representing the tying run, stepped up and knocked his second home run of the contest, making it an even 5-5 matchup.
Nashville broke the tie in the sixth thanks to Steve Lombardozzi's no-out triple, his first of the season, to score Anthony García, who was hit by a pitch to start the frame. After a strikeout and pitching change to bring in righty Michael Brady, Heathcott knocked his second double to make it a 7-5 Sounds lead.
The Sounds continued suit by scoring two more runs in the seventh and blew the game open in the eighth inning with five runs to take a 14-5 lead.
The Sky Sox were able to string together a final run before the end of the eighth inning to make it a 14-6 score at suspension.
The Sky Sox hit the road for an eight-game road trip, starting with four games against Oklahoma City before heading to Nashville for a final four games. Game one against Oklahoma City tomorrow is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. MST at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. The Sky Sox return to Security Service Field for an eight-game, nine-day homestand on May 12 where they will host the Oklahoma City Dodgers and Memphis Redbirds.
