SKY SOX SWEPT BY REDBIRDS IN SATURDAY DOUBLEHEADER
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Sky Sox dropped the twin bill to the Redbirds Saturday at Security Service Field after Memphis plated 22 runs over the two games. The Redbirds took an 11-3 victory in game one and an 11-4 advantage in game two. Sky Sox outfielder
In the Redbirds first inning of game one, after two quick outs, Sky Sox starter Asher fell behind and walked two consecutive Redbirds, which set up for
Memphis grabbed another tally in the third, again with two outs, after Wisdom slugged his second extra-base hit, a high fly that started foul but drifted into fair territory, bouncing off the wall and into no man's land in right-center field.
After Memphis put up four more in the next two frames to make it a commanding 10-1 advantage, the Sky Sox added back a couple after back-to-back doubles by Wren and Sogard following by Bethancourt's single, minimizing the deficit to 10-3. The Redbirds added a final run in the top of the seventh to close out the first game at 11-3.
In game two, Memphis sent 14 batters to the plate, totaling 10 runs on 10 hits, including six hits for extra bases. The run count came within two runs of the single-game record against the Sky Sox (12).
In the bottom of the first inning, leadoff Broxton saw one pitch and sent it off of the mountain above the video board in left-center field to put the Sky Sox on the board. His home run marked the first, first-pitch leadoff home run since Eric Young, Jr. on April 21, 2010 in Colorado Springs against the Tacoma Rainiers.
After Memphis put up one more run in the top of the second, the Sky Sox went on to score a solo run in the third sparked by Broxton's leadoff double and two more in the fourth, where Broxton collected another RBI on his single. Broxton would fall a triple shy of the cycle and the Sky Sox would fall for the second time on the day with an 11-4 final.
The Sky Sox continue into the final game of the series against the Memphis Redbirds at Security Service Field tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Tomorrow's game features 50-cent hot dogs presented by Safeway and Bark in the Park. Additionally, the first 1,000 kids 12 and under through the front gates will receive a special replica Sky Sox kids jersey courtesy of the U.S. Forest Service.
