Sadzeck, Cordell Lead RoughRiders
CORPUS CHRISTI - Conner Sadzeck pitched 5 1/3 innings of no-hit baseball and Ryan Cordell powered a second-inning grand slam as Frisco downed Corpus Christi 5-2 Thursday at Whataburger Field before 4,459.
Sadzeck (3-0) permitted two hits, walked one, and recorded five strikeouts while covering 6 2/3 with 88 pitches (49 strikes).
Sadzeck gave up a 435-foot two-run laser to Derek Fisher in the seventh after plunking lead-off man Alex Bregman. The other hit was Danry Vasquez's one-out single the previous inning. Mott Hyde worked a lead-off walk in the third but was erased on a double play.
Frisco (10-3) took a 1-0 first-inning lead while running Kyle Smith's pitch count to 28. Lead-off man Isiah Kiner-Falefa's liner sat down in right field and he ultimately scored on a Zach Cone two-out infield hit. Kiner-Falefa progressed around the bases as Luiz Mendez walked and Cordell bounced out.
Cordell contributed another way the next inning, his 408-foot grand slam to left pushing the visitors' advantage to 5-0. All four runs were unearned, the result of a fielding error by shortstop Bregman. Preston Beck and Kiner-Falefa contributed singles during the surge.
Smith (0-2), who threw 56 pitches in two frames, walked one and fanned two.
Michael Freeman, David Paulino, and Reymin Guduan pitched well out of the bullpen for the Hooks (8-5), teaming for seven shutout innings. Paulino had six strikeouts over four and 40 pitches (30). Guduan faced four batters in a two-strikeout ninth.
RoughRiders relievers Richelson Pena, Ryne Slack, and Adam Parks combined for four strikeouts while keeping Corpus Christi off the board and achieving the last seven outs.
Bregman and Hooks right fielder Teoscar Hernandez had their hitting streaks snapped at 11 and eight games, respectively.
Corpus Christi's Francis Martes (1-0) faces Sam Wolff (2-0) Friday at 7:05. Radiology Associates presents Star Wars Night and fans also enjoy Bud Light Friday Fireworks.
