Dayton, Ohio - The Dragons will honor Brigid's Path during the unique "Community All-Stars" program on Tuesday, May 21, at 6:00 p.m. when the Dayton Dragons take on the Lake County Captains at Fifth Third Field.
The Dayton community is a great place to live, work, and play. But what makes Dayton truly great are the people who do incredible things each and every day to make our community a special place to call home. Throughout the season, the Dragons, Vectren, and Flying Ace Express Car Wash will honor five "All-Stars" with a special inning break tribute in recognition of their service.
Brigid's Path: Helping Mothers and Children Recover Together
After years of being a foster parent herself, Jill Kingston, the Executive Director at Brigid's Path, now finds herself on a journey that she "was never qualified to do, but called to do it." Brigid's Path is just the second facility in the United States dedicated to working with infants suffering from Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS). With a rampant opioid issue throughout the United States and in Ohio, the facility provides care and support for drug-exposed newborns and their families.
Brigid's Path opened its doors on December 29, 2017, with a staff of 40 employees and 90 trained volunteers as well as a Medical and Clinical Director to care for the babies and their families. In the first year of operation, Brigid's Path cared for 33 babies, 18 of which would have been placed in foster care had this facility not been available. Now, in year two, the facility is planning to double its patient count.
With a flexible timeline for each family, Brigid's Path works with children's services, the mother and family to ensure the baby and parent are taken care of appropriately. No matter what the current life situation is right now, they help set goals for the baby and the family.
"Babies are the innocent victims of the whole opioid crisis," Kingston noted. "In the community, at the epicenter of the epidemic, we have provided this positive hope that people can be a part of. Volunteers, donors and staff give from the heart. They want to see mom and baby succeed. They know that the community succeeds when mom and baby succeed."
Most of the funding for Brigid's Path comes through donations from the community while some does come from government funding. To help, Brigid's Path holds three main fundraisers per year, but are always active around the community to bring more awareness to the larger problems of the opioid crisis.
"Being able to be a part of something that delivers hope to families is something that is near and dear to me," Development Director Jane Snyder said warmly. "Being able to see that we're giving people a new start and hope is what makes me feel so blessed to be a part of it."
