Buschmann, Brown Drive Bulls Past Gwinnett, 4-1
Lawrenceville, GA -- Matt Buschmann worked into the sixth with a lead and Corey Brown doubled in two in the ninth to put away a 4-1 Durham win over Gwinnett on Saturday night.
Buschmann (W, 1-0) marked his return to the Bulls by battling through 5 2/3 innings, allowing just an unearned run in the second. Buschmann's last start for Durham was in Game 3 of the Governor's Cup Finals in 2013 in an epic 2-0, 13-inning win at Pawtucket. He spent last year combining to win 10 games in the Oakland organization before being flipped back to the Rays late in spring training.
Up 2-1 in the ninth, Brown doubled to deep left against lefty reliever Donnie Veal to score Vince Belnome and Joey Butler.
Jordan Norberto (S, 1), who missed nearly all of the last two years, registered a save throwing a perfect ninth inning.
Durham (2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first when Jake Elmore grounded a single to center to score Ryan Brett. After the Braves (1-2) tied the game in the second, the Bulls reclaimed the lead in the fifth. Taylor Motter delivered a sacrifice fly to score Butler for a 2-1 lead.
Jim Miller worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings, holding the lead through the eighth.
Brett picked up his first two Triple-A hits, going 2-4. Elmore went 3-5 as part of Durham's nine-hit attack.
Andrew Bellatti will wrap up the series against Gwinnett on Sunday at 2:05 PM ET against recently acquired Matt Wisler.
