Durham Splits Twin Bill, Wins Series with Gwinnett

DURHAM, NC - The Durham Bulls split a doubleheader with the Gwinnett Braves Sunday afternoon, earning a 4-2 win in game one before dropping game two 3-1 at the DBAP.

In game one right-hander Alex Colome (1-0) earned the win by tossing six strong innings in his second rehab start with Durham, allowing one run on four hits in six innings.

After the G-Braves struck for a quick run in the top of the first, Durham countered in the bottom of the inning when Alexi Casilla doubled and later scored on a single by Mikie Mahtook. The home side tacked on another run in the third when Mahtook struck again, this time doubling down the left field line to score Casilla from second base.

The Bulls (9-9) added some insurance in the bottom of the sixth, as Casilla doubled off the top of the right field wall, scoring Corey Brown and Leonardo Reginatto, each of whom walked for a 4-1 lead.

Ronald Belisario earned his second save of the year, despite allowing a run in the seventh, while Mike Foltynewicz (0-3) took the loss, allowing two runs on six hits in five innings.

In game two the teams were knotted through the first four innings, before Gwinnett (6-11) scored all three of its runs in the fifth frame. Matt Kennelly's single scored a pair, before later scoring on an RBI groundout from Jose Peraza.

Durham got a run back in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single from Reginatto, but could come no closer in the defeat.

Donnie Veal (2-0) earned the win in relief for Gwinnett, while Aaron Kurcz picked up save number four on the campaign. Righty Kirby Yates (0-1) took the loss by allowing three runs in 2/3 of an inning in relief of Jim Patterson, who went 3 2/3 scoreless innings to start the game.

Durham concluded its seven-game homestand with a 5-2 mark, taking 3-of-4 from Charlotte, before winning 2-of-3 against Gwinnett.

The Bulls head north to take on the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in a four-game set beginning Monday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Matt Buschmann (1-1, 2.75) takes the mound for Durham opposite LHP Adam Morgan (0-2, 4.50) for Lehigh Valley.
