FORT WAYNE, Ind. – TinCaps third baseman Marcos Castañon homered and drove in two, shortstop Jackson Merrill bashed a pair of doubles, and the TinCaps blasted the Lake County Captains (Cleveland Guardians affiliate), 9-1, at Parkview Field on a chilly Sunday to salvage a split of the six-game series.
Second baseman Lucas Dunn also had two hits and tallied a pair of runs driven in.
Fort Wayne got on the board early with three runs in the first inning, started by Merrill’s first double of the game. Dunn drove in Merrill and Castañon with a one-out double. First baseman Nathan Martorella, who has reached base safely in all nine games, scored on an RBI single by designated hitter Carlos Luis, who had two hits and two RBIs.
The TinCaps added two in the third and three more in the fourth to take a commanding 8-0 lead into the fifth inning. Castañon delivered the final scoring moment for Fort Wayne with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.
Starting pitcher Ryan Bergert (No. 24 Padres prospect) dazzled with three shutout innings. Bergert allowed just two hits and struck out four.
Relievers Chris Lincoln, Nick Thwaits, and Jason Blanchard all contributed scoreless innings as well.
