SALISBURY, MD – The Fayetteville Woodpeckers’ (15-9) bats were silenced for much of Friday night’s contest at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium as the Delmarva Shorebirds (5-19) knocked off the Woodpeckers for the second straight night, 5-1.

Delmarva jumped out in front with a pair of runs in the first inning against Fayetteville starter Julio Marte (L, 0-1), who made his Single-A debut. Angel Tejada drove in the game’s opening run on a base hit before Maxwell Costes followed with an RBI single of his own. The Shorebirds made it 3-0 in the second on a wild pickoff attempt by Marte, who went three and a third innings and struck out five.

The Woodpeckers were unable to solve Delmarva starter Michael Forret, who went four scoreless innings and struck out seven. The deficit remained at three until the bottom of the seventh where the Shorebirds added two more. Tejada earned his second RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly and Costes then got his second on another run-scoring single.

Fayetteville got their lone run in the top of the eighth on one swing. Kenni Gomez cranked a solo home run off reliever Riley Cooper (W, 1-0) to break up the shutout bid. It was Gomez’s second homer of the year, both coming on the road.

With the series now tied, the Woodpeckers sends RHP Jackson Nezuh to the mound looking to regain the upper hand. Meanwhile, the Shorebirds are expected to start RHP Nestor German. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
