SALISBURY, MD – The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (16-11) put a stop to their three-game losing streak on Sunday afternoon at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium with a 5-2 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds (6-20). With the win, the Woodpeckers salvaged a series split with the Shorebirds and have still not lost a series in 2024.

Fayetteville got a tremendous start from Astros 2023 second round pick Alonzo Tredwell (W, 1-1). The former UCLA Bruin tossed five innings, allowing just a single run on five hits and one walk while striking out six. Tredwell has surrendered one run or less in three of his first five Single-A outings.

Delmarva struck first in the second on a Maxwell Costes RBI single. However, the Woodpeckers responded with a big fourth inning against Shorebirds reliever Jacob Cravey (L, 0-2). With the bases loaded and one out, Kenni Gomez scored on a Cravey wild pitch to tie things at one. Yamal Encarnacion then grounded out, bringing home Waner Luciano to make it 2-1 Fayetteville. Moments later, another wild pitch got away, and Chase Jaworsky came across.

In the top of the seventh, the Woodpeckers loaded the bases with nobody out. Up came Oliver Carrillo, who lifted a sacrifice fly to left that pushed the lead to three. Gomez immediately followed with an RBI groundout to bring the score to 5-1.

Fayetteville got two scoreless innings in relief from Kelly Austin, who lowered his season earned run average to 1.00 in the process. Delmarva grabbed a run in the eighth against Dawill Almonte, but Abel Mercedes (SV, 2) retired all three hitters he faced to shut the door in the ninth.

The Woodpeckers will have Monday off before they return home Tuesday to begin a big six-game series with the top team in the North Division in the Carolina Mudcats. First pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 6:35 PM at Segra Stadium.
