The Great Falls Voyagers came into Friday night action looking to play a double header against the Billings Mustangs and after winning game one on Wednesday maybe pick up a series win or sweep. Wish granted as the Voyagers won both games to get a series sweep.
Game one saw the Mustangs jump out to an early lead in the first inning 1-0, but the Voyagers answered back in the third inning after dropping an opportunity in the 2nd inning with the bases loaded and 1 out. The third inning saw the Voyagers plate two on two walks and a single by Michael Deeb.
The Mustangs plated three in the 4th and three in the 5th as Voyager pitching gave up six walks and hit one batter. While only managing to cross one in the 5th inning themselves on a walk by Dom Abbadessa and a single by Tavis Brunson.
The Voyagers found themselves down 8-3 going into the bottom of the 6th and the outlook looked bleak. Brunson started the inning off with a single and the hit parade continued from there as Deeb, and Chris Caffrey managed singles mixed around a few fielder choice plays that went the Voyagers way. After putting 5 across in the bottom of the 6th the Voyagers went into the 7th tied. AAron Kern came in at the top of the 7th to shut down the Mustangs 1,2,3.
A strikeout to start the 7th and things looked like they were heading for a home run duel, however a Quintin Alexander single, Troy Dixon walk, a try to get Dixon at second on a ground ball by Abbadessa loaded the bases with one out. Enter Michael Deeb at the plate, with a 1 ball 1 strike count Deeb check swings and the ball goes behind the catcher, and Alexander scores from third for the win!!! Or so everyone thought until the umpires convened and determined that Deeb had ticked the ball. Deeb strikes out, and with Chris Caffrey up to the plate and Alexander running up and down the third base line, pitcher CJ Gonzales for the Mustangs is called for a balk, scoring Alexander for the win!! This time it counted and the Voyagers escaped game one with a 9-8 win.
Game two started off much better for the Voyagers as the bats were hot and pitcher Damon Ellis was hotter as he only gave up 1 run on 5 hits through 6 innings. The Voyagers scored two in the first, one in the second, six in the third, and two in the fifth highlighted by an in the park home run by Troy Dixon in the fifth inning. With Kyle Taylor closing the door in the 7th the Voyagers got an easy win in the second game 11-2 to get the sweep.
The Voyagers travel for three games in Billings followed by a six game stand in Boise. They will next be home on June 16th when they welcome in the Boise Hawks for a six game stand.
