HARTFORD, CT – Altoona swatted four home runs to wrap up a 15-7 win over the Hartford Yard Goats as the teams finished a suspended game from Wednesday night at Dunkin Donuts Park. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed due to rain. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 4:05 p.m. to make up Tuesday’s game.
Thursday’s victory for the Curve saw an incredible display of power as Cal Mitchell recorded his first career multi-homer game in the victory. Picking up a 2-2 game in the middle of the second inning that was suspended on Wednesday night, Mitchell knocked a two-run homer in the top of the third inning into the upper deck in right-center to give the Curve a 5-2 lead that they would not relinquish.
Travis MacGregor delivered six innings of relief following Roansy Contreras to earn the victory. MacGregor allowed two runs on four hits and one walk and needed just 74 pitches to work his way through the Yard Goats lineup.
The Curve matched their franchise record with three home runs in the fifth inning off Yard Goats right-hander Karl Kauffman. Mitchell started the inning with a no-doubt bomb to right and later in the inning Oneil Cruz swatted a three-run homer to left-center to give the Curve a 10-3 lead. Rodolfo Castro added a solo homer off Kauffman to finish the pitcher’s night. The three-homer inning for the Curve marked the 10th time in franchise history that Altoona homered three times in the same inning, the first time since Keon Broxton, Gift Ngope, and Carlos Paulino each homered in the second inning on July 23, 2014 at New Britain.
Canaan Smith-Njigba, Castro, Brendt Citta, Mitchell and Ethan Paul each recorded multi-hit games as the Curve collected 16 hits in the win.
Altoona will continue their series in Hartford on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. LHP Trey McGough (0-2, 4.87) will start for the Curve, RHP Garrett Schilling (1-4, 4.63) takes the ball for the Yard Goats.
