Redbirds Short in 12 Innings in Front of Sellout Crowd

MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The first-place Memphis Redbirds tied the game in the bottom of the ninth, but the Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals) prevailed in 12 innings Wednesday night at AutoZone Park, 2-1, in front of a sellout crowd of 10,776.
The loss snapped the Redbirds' six-game winning streak. The club is 53-33 on the season.
Kevin Herget worked 8.0 solid innings, giving up one third-inning run on four hits. He did not issue a walk and struck out six. He kept the Redbirds in the ballgame by allowing just that third-inning home run, and the other three Omaha hits against him were a fourth-inning single, a fifth-inning base hit, and a seventh-inning double. Those did not amount to anything for the Storm Chasers.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth, Adolis García led off the inning by reaching on a throwing error. After a strikeout, he moved to third on an Alex Mejia single. Edmundo Sosa then followed with a single to center field that scored Garcia and tied the game at 1.
Memphis left two runners on base in the bottom of the 10th and another in the bottom of the 11th. Conner Greene entered in the top of the 12th, and he tossed a wild pitch to move the designated runner from second to third. A double past a diving Oscar Mercado scored the run and put Omaha ahead, 2-1.
The Redbirds got a runner on third in the bottom of the 12th, but a groundout ended the contest.
After Herget and before Greene, Tyler Webb threw 2.0 shutout innings of relief, and Edward Mujica tossed a scoreless 11th.
Garcia finished 2-for-5 at the plate, as did Wilfredo Tovar and Carson Kelly.
Memphis was hampered by going 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position and leaving 13 men on base.
