The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are committed to creating a family-friendly and welcoming environment at the ballpark for all guests. As part of that commitment, we have adopted this written policy addressing fan behavior. The policy includes a Fan Code of Conduct, which is fan-facing and describes how fans are expected to behave.

All Myrtle Beach Pelicans staff, including game-day staff, must receive a copy of this policy before working any games. In addition, all staff must receive annual training on this policy, the substance of the Fan Code of Conduct, and how to respond to prohibited fan behavior. All training will be documented.

A copy of the Fan Code of Conduct can be found at any entrance gate to the ballpark, at any guest services booth, on www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com, and in the official game program.

Fans will be notified before and during the game through public service announcements (“PSAs”) on the main video board that summarize the Fan Code of Conduct, the penalties for violation, and how to report prohibited behavior.

FAN CODE OF CONDUCT - Out of respect for fellow guests, players, coaches, and ballpark staff, all guests are prohibited from:

  • Trespassing on the playing field at any time;
  • Interfering with baseballs that are in play;
  • Throwing or tossing objects;
  • Using foul, obscene or derogatory language (see below) or gestures;
  • Misusing or overconsuming alcohol, including, underage consumption;
  • Behaving in a manner that is disruptive, unruly, or abusive;
  • Accessing areas of the ballpark without a proper ticket, pass, or credential;
  • Misusing tickets, passes, or credentials in any way; or
  • Bringing prohibited items (listed below) into the ballpark.

Furthermore, guests are required to wear shirts and shoes at all times, and guests appearing intoxicated will be ejected from the ballpark and turned over to the Myrtle Beach Police Department.

Derogatory language is defined as offensive language concerning a person’s race, ethnicity, gender, religion, disability, age, sexual orientation, or national origin, and anyone using such language is subject to automatic ejection from the ballpark.

Violations of the Fan Code of Conduct will not be tolerated and may lead to ejection from the ballpark, a ban on attending future games, or other consequences. Guests who are found to have used derogatory language will be ejected from the ballpark.

Guest may report a violation to the Fan Code of Conduct to any game day employee, front office employee, or at Guest Services which is located on the main concourse behind home plate.

PROHIBITED ITEMS - The following items are prohibited in the ballpark: beach balls, inflatables, glass bottles, fireworks, firearms or any other weapons, laser devices or pointers, skateboards, rollerblades, skate shoes, hover boards, toy guns or knives, sticks, clubs, unmanned aerial vehicles, aerosol cans, baseball bats, hard sided coolers, and containers larger than 16x16x8 inches.

Dominance From Dominick: A Look Inside The Mind Of Pelicans Right-Hander Dominick Reid

The pitcher’s mound can feel like a lonely place. Everyone else other than the catcher on your team is positioned behind the mound, out of sight. All the pitcher can see is the batter, the catcher, and the umpire. It can be a daunting sight. Now throw in the fact that you are making your first start of your professional career against the Charleston RiverDogs in front of a hostile crowd of 5,972 fans at “The Joe.” That was the situation that Pelicans starting pitcher Dominick Reid faced back on April 2. For some pitchers, the pressure and the moment can make them crumble, but not Reid. He thrives in these moments, the man in the arena mentality.

“My thought process is I’m the best when I’m on the mound,” Reid stated in a pregame interview. “I want to go out and showcase my abilities in the best way that I possibly can.”

Reid stood tall on the mound to start the bottom of the first inning that night. Thanks to the Pelicans offense, he was pitching with a 1-0 lead.

The Cubs 15th overall prospect according to MLB pipeline comes set on the rubber, lifts his left leg, separates his hands, and fires in a high fast ball to RiverDogs hitter Dean Moss, swing and miss. Strike one. His first one as a professional but he can’t dwell on that because the clock is ticking for his next pitch to be thrown. Great pitchers have the memory of a goldfish, 10 seconds. Reid ended up retiring the RiverDogs in order by a pair of flyouts and a groundout to end his first inning as a Pelican. His night was just beginning.

After the Birds put up six runs in the top of the second, capped off by three-run home run from Cole Mathis, Reid trotted back out to the mound for his second inning. The flamethrower powered a fastball by RiverDogs infielder Daniel Pierce for his first strikeout of his pro career. A moment that was probably not pondered over in the heat of the moment, but one that was revisited when the game mellowed out. On the night, Reid tallied five strikeouts over four shutout innings while only surrendering a walk and two hits.

Reid couldn’t take all the credit for his success though. It’s all about trusting his stuff.

“I think just trusting in the pitch calling from Coach Betch (Betcher) and just believing in the gameplan before the game…and going out there and executing it the best I can with all pitches.” Reid described.

Opening night wasn’t the only time the Cubs third overall pitching prospect has found success this season. Over his first three starts of the season, Reid racked up 15 strikeouts over 12.1

shutout innings of work while only giving up seven hits. The right-hander’s fastball looked lively as of late, but Reid’s most reliable pitch to throw has been the changeup.

“Been able to use the heater pretty well lately, my go-to for me is my changeup, just always trusting in that,” Reid said.

There’s always excitement around new things and Reid has a shiny new toy that he had been creating and tinkering with over the offseason. His sweeper. The sweeper is a new pitch that has become popular in baseball. Described as a modern breaking ball and often considered as a type of slider, it displays horizontal movement (usually around 15+ inches) rather than the vertical drop of a traditional curveball. Reid emphasized the importance of having a good pitch variety.

“The new pitch that’s come along way has been the sweeper… and just being able to trust that and have a solid pitch mix,” Reid explained. “Just being able to mix it up and keep these hitters off balance.”

In his short time at the pro level, Dominick has had to learn quickly and adjust to the heightened level of competition on the fly. One thing that surprised him was the caliber of discipline that hitters show at the Single-A level.

“I was kinda surprised by the level of competition,” Reid said. “More disciplined hitters. More advanced hitters…I had to take that into my pitching, having to be a lot more precise with everything…It turns the focus notch up a little.”

In just his short time with the Pelicans, Reid has shown that he can deal on the rubber and will look to continue his success as the season progresses.
